Iniquities of HE

A massively expanded brane sounds to me like a good outcome, but it depends whether it is outweighed by bad outcomes... I spose those things have been around for a while, but there just seem to be an awful lot of them on jobs.ac.uk at the mo

When i was discussing whether to try for the journal job with my supervisors, they made the point that increasingly it is going to be v rare for people to have a linear career that goes doctorate-postdoc/teaching fellowships-permanent post, and that people will probably drop in and out of various types of work as they go through (so e.g. I work on the journal and have a few p/t research commitments, but in a few years might be able to be a principal investigator or something - a ha ha ha erk - & then maybe do some editorial work, indexing etc. blah blah). But that rather sunny view does depend on there being other work to move to, and that is so much a matter of happenstance... do the possibilities outweigh the risk of data entry temping?

Don't know whether I will keep thorts up - usually my pattern is to do things with wild enthusiasm and then peter out dismally.
