Robbie has the brightest blue eyes I have ever seen. When his world is peaceful, he is a ray of sunshine. When something is bothering him, he uses his world as his emotional scratching post. He lashes out at the most innocent, the most sensitive: Caitie, who wouldn't swat a mosquito, Aliyah, who already struggle with her self-esteem, Juli, who is tiny, timid.

He talks about things that are so above the head of our lower elementary kids: STDs, condoms, intercourse. He scares the little kids with talk about Robert the Doll, who will kill you in your sleep. There is talk in town that he has touched a little girl in an inappropriate place.

I've known about Robbie for three of my four years here. I taught his older sisters, WinDi and Katherine at Mary Immaculate. The girls were removed from the home and were sent to live with their dad in Tampa. Before they left, WinDi told me that she was worried about Robbie: without the girls as protection, he would be the next target.

I only have pieces of this puzzle. I know Lisa (the mom) is unstable- she can put on a proper face to make everyone believe she is all together, but i know better. I don't know Rob (the dad) as well. I know he molested Katherine, which is why Lisa made Rob leave.

I do know something is wrong.
I know I am a mandated child abuse reporter, but how safe would my reporting be?
Do I cover my ass, and leave it in the hands of the principal, or do I step out in faith to protect this boy?

What is happening to this boy? How do we help him before the door to his childhood is slammed shut forever?
