Maes had clocked out, hopped into his unmarked car, and was headed home, contemplating a lovely evening at home when the call came over the radio about a break in. The nearest on-duty cop was a good twenty minutes away, more than long enough for the crooked vigilante to get to the thief or for the culprit to get away. Maes was only two streets from the house. "So much for a peaceful evening..."
After putting on his lights and answering the radio, Maes hit the gas, navigating quickly to the house. He skipped the sirens; no matter how much fun they were, they would only serve to alert the suspect that he was approaching. As soon as he got there he could see the a woman peering through her blinds in the direction of the house, no doubt the caller. The front door was clearly ajar. Pulling his sidearm, Maes leaned against it, paused, and spun inward, his gun pointed into the house as he looked for the intruder.
