What: A discussion about police and the city
Who: Maes, Sasuke
When: Sunday night
Where: On the road, in Maes' car
Rating: PG
Open/Closed To: Maes, Sasuke
Maes idled the car outside of Sasuke's place, having called to say he was there. He wasn't sure how the conversation was going to go. Optimism vied with pessimism in his mind, and of late pessimism had seemed more and more tempting to give into. The workload was getting heavier, and his friends were being assigned elsewhere. Had the city been given up on?
And of course there was the oh-so-encouraging post by Aizen. If it wasn't Director Tseng declaring that ShinRa could do police work, it was Aizen. When it rained, it poured. Not to mention that while Maes had no evidence, he was pretty certain Aizen was behind the first Hummer attack, and ShinRa the second. Right. Trustworthy, upright citizens, them.
And now Sasuke was wanting to quit. That left Maes with practically no one, and the jab about cops not doing enough stung. Maes had been working, and this was his first break today. He'd had a donut for breakfast, at his desk, a sandwich for lunch, at a crime scene, and another sandwich for dinner, at yet another crime scene. He was doing everything he could, and so were most of the officers he knew. No, he couldn't explain why they hadn't gotten a break, nor why they couldn't seem to solve these cases, and yes, he was just as frustrated. But at least he wasn't going to the criminals to try to fix things. At least he wasn't blurring the lines of legality and emotions.
So Maes waited, tired, disappointed, and frustrated in his car. He wasn't sure if this would do any good, but he would hope. Hope was just about all he had left.
