Summary:
The sun is beating down the back of Blaine's neck and he hopes Kurt will find it sexy rather than gross if he catches Blaine wiping the sweat away. It is the first 90 degree day of the summer and Blaine now realizes he shouldn't have made fun of Kurt for his insistence on wearing a sun hat.
"You look like an old lady!" he had teased while they got ready inside.
"And when I'm 80 I'll look like an old lady with flawless skin, so who'll be laughing then?"
Honoring veterans is big in the Hudson family, and barbecuing is big in the Hummel family, so this is kind of a perfect day for everyone. The backyard is filled with an even mixture of Burt's buddies from the garage, Carole's friends from the office, and most of the Glee Club. Puck and Brittany are figuring out the best way to send Artie down the Slip n' Slide, while some of Burt's friends are teaching Santana the finer points of grilling. She's giggling a lot and generally making a show of her femininity, but Blaine is pretty certain Santana just wants to learn how to grill.
He and Kurt have been banished to the kids table after Kurt interrogated Carole about the lack of party favors for their guests. Now they sit drinking Kurt's sun tea and grazing knuckles beneath the table. They aren't yet sure how to act around this many adults. the guys from Hummel Tires are used to Kurt's flamboyancy, but they've never seen him with a boy before.
Carole passes through the group refilling people's ice tea and making sure none of the teens are drinking beer. On her way back to the house she passes a gruff intimidating guy Blaine had to wait with for the bathroom earlier. When Blaine had walked back outside feeling very short and still having to pee, Kurt had laughed that it was "just Lou" the owner of the local scrapyard. Blaine continues to be amazed with the ease Kurt feels around Burt's mechanic friends.
Lou stops Carole, "This is the best potato salad I've ever had. If my ex-wife had cooked like you, we'd still be married."
Carole laughs, "Oh thanks, but those were all Kurt and his boyfriend, Blaine. They did most of the cooking."
Without missing a beat, Lou calls across the patio, "Nice job, fellas" and raises his beer to them.
Kurt smiles and nods towards Blaine, who must have looked terrified, because Kurt tips his head back and laughs, the sunlight gleaming off his wide brim, before squeezing his hand tightly and placing their interlocked fingers firmly on the table.
