murphy's law

You guys know about Murphy's Law, right? My dad has a story about it. According to him, Murphy was the engineer in charge of designing the first ejector seats for fighter planes. His life philosophy, as you well can guess, was: "Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong." But Murphy was a pragmatist rather than a pessimist. You see, as he assumed everything was going to go wrong, he was able to plan for it, so that if something in fact DID go wrong, it would not be a catastrophe.

Sometimes I think Murphy is Dad's patron saint, at least when I hear the admiration in Dad's voice when he tells this story. I myself think it is a useful strategy, but being a lot younger than Dad and a lot less cynical, I sometimes fall prey to unrealistic, optimistic hopes.

Which brings me to last Monday. So, it's nearing classtime and I'm ready to bike to Concordia. However, the clouds are rolling in, and it definitely looks like drizzle-time to me. Unfortunately for me, cycling is the only way to get to my class on time at this point, so I feel I have no choice but to bite the bullet. So I'll get wet, I thought... It shouldn't be too bad. Maybe I'll get there before the real storm hits.

Famous last words.

I was halfway down De Maisonneuve when started pouring. By the time I squelched into class, I looked as if Mother Nature had poured giant, celestial bucket of water over my head.

Fortunately, my papers were only just a little bit damp. Also fortunately, my classmates liked my text. Also fortunately, now I can tell which copy of Making Money is mine and which is Grace's. (hers is the one that still looks nearly new)

rain, bike rides, school
