There's no way in hell Dean is getting in the middle of this. He just watches them, Dad sitting in that relaxed position and speaking in that calm, steady voice that Dean knows means he's absolutely furious, Sammy in that high-pitched kid's voice full of ten-dollar words. Dean never taught him to speak like a college professor.

Okay, he did teach him the word "ballistics," but only in the practical, here's-how-you-make-a-proper-bullet way. The stuff about trigonometry and parabolas was all beyond him. Just look at his last math test. Sammy knew eighth-grade math better than he did.

"Of course I'm proud of you, Sammy," Dad says in that controlled, deliberately unemotional voice, which kind of undercuts those words. "It's just that it's too conspicuous. No identifying marks."

"Right," Sammy says, and Dean braces for what he knows is coming next. Sammy knows very well you don't bad-mouth the Impala, but that never stops him, even though it always means Dad is going to declare the discussion over, permanently. "Like a fifteen-year-old mint-condition black Impala is inconspicuous. Way to blend in, Dad. You don't think this is too identifiable, you just don't think it's cool."

Sam finds it the summer Dean is gone. It's hidden in a compartment in the weapons locker in the trunk, sealed in plastic inside an oversized manila envelope. In mint condition, just like the car - not a single wrinkle or smudge, not faded or stained.

"My child made the Honor Roll at Kingstown Elementary School."

For an instant, Sam wants to put it on the bumper, but only for an instant. He places it carefully back in the plastic bag that's smudged with numerous fingerprints and packs it away back where he found it.
