I'm browsing on-line for job possibilities when my on-line pager flashes a message from
typsygypsy. A moment latter it pops up again, this time from
youngraven. Coincidence? Hmmn. Maybe not. Let's give a listen shall we?
typsygypsy is obviously excited about something while she tells me to check my Spriggan e-mail.
youngraven tells me to call her as soon as I can.
Ok, there's something happening here. I go take a look.
We've a message from the Flying Saucer in Ft. Worth asking if we're available for St. Pat's! Cool! I call
youngraven; she's already checked with everyone and we're all available to play. Let's go for it.
I call the Flying Saucer. He says, "Woah, that was fast!" (It had only been a few minutes since he sent us his e-mail!)
We chat about the particulars and I pitch a price. It's looking good. He asks to wait to hear back from a couple of other possible bands but will make a final decision by Friday evening. Cool. I ask where he heard of us and he tells me on the Texas Celtic Music Network. I knew it was a good idea to list us there. Hmmn. I bet the other bands he's contacted are on that same list…(a little research)…ah-HA! Many of those bands are already booked for St. Pat's! This looks promising!
I'm telling
youngraven about my talk with the Flying Saucer when we get another message, this one from Shaddow. He's received an e-mail from City Streets also about St. Pat's.
"Shaddow, is this for Spriggan or October Country?"
He checks. It's for October Country, but it seems that OC may not be just what City Streets wants. He'll point them in our direction if that's the case.
So one possible gig that's looking very promising and, though there are several ifs-ands-'n'-buts, possibly another gig latter that same night. Let's look at a map, shall we?
The Flying Saucer and City Streets are just a block away from each other! Heck, we might be able to just walk from one to the other!
Another page. Another message. This one is from Burlington about my application for a job. They want me to come in for an interview at five. Ack. I'm supposed to pick-up my sister at 4:30. Quick call to Jenny; she calls Johnny. He can drive her home. Yeah! I call Burlington and tell them I'll be there.
I dressed pretty sharp for it, considering the position is in the Men's Attire: pleated slacks, silk tie (ok, so it was a Grateful Dead tie, but you can't tell that unless you look on the back and read the label) set off against a nice dark-blue button-down shirt. Pretty sharp, I thought.
The interview went pretty well. I meet with the Store Manager and we had a pleasant talk. She said she had interviewed several applicants and had several more to interview after myself but that she wanted to make a final decision fairly soon. I should hear by the latter part of next week, possibly by Thursday.
She also mentioned, while looking over my work history, that she couldn't touch my previous salary. I hope I expressed to her, without seeming desperate, that I was more than willing to take the position at a lower wage than I've had. She also said it might be only part-time. "That's fine," I tell her, "I shall be happy to start part-time try for a full-time if and when one becomes available," all the while my mind is screaming, 'Arrgh! No! Give me full-time! Give me more money! Tell me to start on Monday!' I smile and try to look composed and charming. She says, "Good man." Whew!
That evening, I head over to Mistletoe to meet up with
typsygypsy and
youngraven for our (somewhat) usual Thursday Night Pratice/experiment with tunes/craic session.
kurlyfry was also there watching The 5th Element. What a fun film! We laugh and sigh over some of the actors (not the same ones!), I show them where Willis's character is nearly called by his real name and how smoothly they covered it, we're impressed all over again by the Diva's singing. We watch more than half the movie before we finally get around to actually playing music.
With mimosas and ales (odd combination, eh?) we don't actually get much accomplished musically, but ah well. As
singedcat would say, "We're just f*****g around." We talk, listen to some CDs and play along. End the evening listening to the A Mighty Wind soundtrack.
Grand company, drink, music, and movie…who could ask for more?
