It was more a question about priorities, and where music, a family, and other things fall, relative to each other, on your list of priorities. Although my own priorities have changed periodically throughout my life, I've always known exactly what I would and would not give up for a relationship and so forth. Through that, I've always known what things I valued and wanted the most.
Like I said, it was a hypothetical question. I'm not suggesting that you would or should have to give up music in order to have a family. There's no reason you shouldn't be able to have both -- lots of people do it. Although, you probably need to take into consideration that no one with any sense will want to have kids with you unless you can provide a certain amount of stability.
I think there are way too damn many people who get married and have kids simply because they think that is what they are supposed to do, or have always assumed that is what they would do, without stopping to consider whether it's what they really want. The result is a lot of miserable people with equally miserable children that they never should have had in the first place! There are quite a few folks having kids for bad reasons as well...
You always felt so strongly about having a family of your own that I always assumed you had thought all of that through, and knew exactly why it was important to you. If you haven't, you should, if for no other reason than to reinforce your own list of priorities.
