Character Information:

Character Name: Nicholas D. Wolfwood
Age: Never stated but it's safe to say his age is between 16-20, though he looks like he's over 30.
Canon: Trigun (mangaverse)
Appearance: Okay, for starters? Wolfwood is a tall dude, probably reaching somewhere between 6'1”-2”. He's got long arms and long legs, giving him the appearance of being more thin than what he truly is. The guy is pretty solidly built and heck, he'd have to be to swing around that giant gun. His hair is black and messy, giving him a sort of perpetual bedhead look. He's rarely clean shaven and always scruffy; to those with a more conservative view point, he probably looks shady. Add on a year round tan that comes from being born and raised on a planet with two suns, and well, you've got Wolfwood.

Personality: Wolfwood's a guy with a lot of layers; think of an onion, with all the smelly, offensive personality wrapped up in a flimsy skin. Upon meeting him in the third volume of the Trigun series, most get the impression that he's a broke priest who will more than willingly try to scam you out of your money. A pretty accurate description; Wolfwood likes nothing more than finding a way to make an easy buck, but that’s not all there is to him.

He comes off as being over friendly, pushy, and tends to invade other people's personal space when there's clearly something he wants (money, a free meal, etc.) or when he’s trying to keep people at a distance. The guy sidesteps questions like no one's business, gives half answers and bullshits his way through the rest. He tries to be a charmer and may seem like a genuinely nice guy but most of the time? He's just too shady. However, you do see that he's got a softer side to him when it comes to kids. After a conversation with Vash about his smiles, you get the feeling that he’s more perceptive than he lets on, that he's only playing the idiot.

For the most part, that personality is fake; a mask he constructed to keep strangers at a distance and hide his inner monster. In reality, Nicholas can be quite cruel, abusive and generally unsympathetic. If you've got an issue, he's not the kind of guy who anyone would wanna come complaining to; he'd sooner tell someone to suck it up and give the advice no one wants to hear than offer a hug or false reassurance. His general outlook on life is extremely pessimistic and it shows, but in the same breath he's got a lot of hope for someone who considers themselves a realist. Sure, Wolfwood has been through a lot in his rather short lifetime and it's left him extremely jaded and bitter. He doesn't trust easily and when he does, it doesn't guarantee one hundred percent loyalty or honesty, but he's been shown on occasion to wish for the best, though it's rarely for himself. He's a firm believer in the concept of Martialism and will kill almost anyone who he believes is a danger to himself or someone he cares for. Though he doesn’t appear to be torn up about the people he has killed (for he firmly believes that all of them deserved it, in some shape or form), he feels guilty about having to become the person he is now to survive. Despite his guilt, apparently some of that assassin training carried over right; Wolfwood is a very physical person and dishes violence out freely. Doesn't matter who it is or what he's doing; it could be simply punching his best friend for running his mouth (which he does a lot), or shooting giant mutant killing machines in the face, it's clear he enjoys the violence.

Another thing worth noting is that Wolfwood doesn’t hold a very high opinion of himself. It’s fairly safe to assume that he hates himself, given that he calls himself a monster and a freak. However, this isn’t noticeable in the way he carries or presents himself, his self-assured and confident demeanor see to that. When upset, his guard rarely goes down enough to let people know how he's feeling. Instead, he pushes them away, preferring to mope and sulk in peace. He is fiercely independent and rarely asks for help, even in life or death situations. Not necessarily because he finds people unreliable, but that he feels he needs to take care of everyone on his own, even if they don't need or want his help. He's a shining example of big brother syndrome at it's best (and worst). Just don't expect him to coddle you. Don't get me wrong, though. Wolfwood is pretty much indifferent to the struggles of strangers (or at least he pretends to be), so unless it's by accident, chance, or because someone he cares about is sticking their nose where it doesn't belong, he's not going to get involved with every little skirmish along the way. It's not his business and he's perfectly okay with being the bystander if it means staying out of trouble. Wolfwood also tends to be very sarcastic, opinionated, and blunt. If he doesn't like something you're doing, he won't beat around the bush about it.

Though not the greatest conversationalist, Wolfwood is more than capable of making small talk when he’s motivated. He’s fairly analytical in his thought process, and while he may not be book smart, he certainly makes up for that in street smarts. He can also act fairly immature at times (a testament to his true age), but those moments are very few and far between. Usually seen when he's yelling at Vash for something stupid.

Background: Not much is known about Wolfwood's childhood before becoming an orphan but it's strongly implied that at one point, he had a family. It’s possible that they died or were no longer able to take care of him but based on his conversations with other people, it's safe to say he probably lived a pretty rough life at this point. Regardless of how, he ended up being placed in an orphanage (most likely for children with troubled pasts, based on Livio's experiences and something Wolfwood says about the other orphanage kids having it rough) on the outskirts of December and spent most of his youth there.

However, it wasn't until a young boy named Livio arrived at the orphanage that he had his first real friend. After a minor argument regarding Livio's sulking and inability to move on since being abandoned and where Nicholas is a giant can-throwing douche, the two become pals. Wolfwood helps Livio find his place and their friendship flourishes as the two help look after the other children.

That all changes the night when a young Wolfwood witnesses Livio murdering a puppy belonging to one of the girls at the orphanage. The next morning, he confronts his friend about what he's done but Livio denies having anything to do with it despite the blood on his hands. Wolfwood believes him eventually but Livio doubts his memory and thus leaves the orphanage without saying goodbye. Wolfwood leaves the orphanage shortly after Livio's departure with a man dressed as a priest, planning to help build orphanages and churches around Gunsmoke. Presumably, it's to send money back to his makeshift family.

It’s quickly revealed that the man he left with has no interest in helping out people around Gunsmoke, taking Nicholas to the headquarters the Eye of Michael-a fanatical occult of assassins that worship and follow Knives’ orders. He spends the next few years being brutally trained by a man called Master Chapel to be his future successor and eventually physically enhanced against his will to superhuman levels through experimentation, aging his body. Deciding that he’s had enough at this point and that he doesn’t want other kids being used the same way he was, he tries to kill Chapel and leaves to find Knives with the intention of killing him to end the cycle.

After a lot of traveling and his bike breaking down in the middle of the desert, he almost dies from heat exhaustion only to be rescued by chance as Vash and the insurance girls drive by on a passing bus. They travel together until they reach Jeneora Rock then part on their separate ways. Wolfwood meets up with the Gung Ho Guns for the first time under the name of his former mentor after Legato mistakes him for Chapel.

Shortly afterwards, things reach explosive levels between Vash and Knives, causing Vash to lose control of his powers and release his Angel Arm which blows a hole in the Fifth Moon. Wolfwood managed to escape the blast radius unharmed, but it’s later revealed that he returns shortly after Vash has disappeared to attempt to kill Knives. Paralyzed by fear, he can’t bring himself to kill him. Knives wakes up, tells Wolfwood to go find Vash and bring him back.

Two years later, Wolfwood tracks the sixty billion double dollar man down to a rundown town, dragging him with him under the guise that they’re going to find and stop Knives. The two travel together amicably for the most part until they reach Karkassas, where the pair encounter their first Gung Ho Gun together; Rai Dei the Blade. Vash decides he wants to take care of Rai Dei on his own, in hopes of beating him and making him see the error of his killing ways. Vash wins, starts to walk away from Rai Dei (who is furious that he’s been beaten) with his back turned and as Rai Dei starts to attack Vash, Wolfwood quickly shoots him, and he dies.

A small fight follows between the two over killing and who was right in the end with the argument reaching no real answer. Tension high, they continue their journey to the place Vash considers home, a damaged SEED ship. When they arrive, it’s only to find that two of the Gung Ho Guns are waiting for them; Leonoff the Puppet Master and Gray the Ninelives. After another vicious fight, Vash and Nicholas come out victorious, but hardly unscathed. The pair spend some time recovering-coming to a mutual understanding and agreement about their separate view points-before moving on and eventually encounter the next three guns; Midvalley, Zazie and Hoppered.

Things explode, Legato shows up, people die, Vash goes nuts, almost blows up another city and Wolfwood finally gets a look at the damage he’s capable of up close and personal. When it’s all said and done, he spends half of the next volume distancing himself from Vash out of fear. He even starts to honestly consider killing him to eliminate the risk of him going off again. Wolfwood manages to convince himself it’s the right thing to do and as he stands behind Vash, gun pointed to his head, he finds he can’t do it. Shortly after, the two separate from the Insurance Girls and make their way to Knives' hideout.

After Vash moves on to deal with Knives, leaving Wolfwood behind, he encounters a very alive Master Chapel and, much to his surprise, a much older Livio. The three are about to fight when Elendira the Crimson Nail puts a stop to it while Chapel and Livio retreat, for the moment.

Over the next seven months, Vash has been subdued by Legato and remains held against his will inside the Ark, while Wolfwood, Chapel, and Livio have all been carrying out orders to eliminate anyone who tries to stand in Knives' way. Wolfwood, realizing that the entire planet is going to Hell and that there's nothing that can be done about it while Vash is being held captive, attempts to break Vash out and escape. He shoots Legato in the back but not before getting injured himself. However, before they can get the hell out of dodge, they're confronted by both Livio and Chapel. Wolfwood pleads with Livio to see reason-Knives isn't going to spare the orphanage (and the only place that the two called home) while wiping out the rest of the planet-but he fails to listen. A fight follows with Wolfwood getting badly beaten and eventually passing out when Vash wakes up and saves the both of them and they fall back to the planet, somehow managing not to die. Gravity, how does it work.

They are eventually picked up by one of the colony ships, but shortly after Wolfwood leaves once again to go home and settle his business with Livio and Chapel. He had plenty of opportunity to ask for help here but it's important to note that he didn't. Because he is retarded. When he arrives, the two have already taken the orphanage residents as hostages. The fight that follows is long, gruesome, and violent, eventually ending with Chapel's death at his own hands but at a high price. Wolfwood is unable to defeat Razlo (Livio’s second personality, yes it is as bizarre as it sounds) alone so he chooses to overdose on several vials of regenerative drug that amplify his abilities. Upside is that this means he can heal pretty much instantly. Bad news is this kills him by essentially liquefying his organs during the fight.

After the fight ends, Livio reforms, and the orphanage kids escape upon learning Knives is quickly approaching. Wolfwood, Livio and Vash stay behind after Wolfwood tells the orphanage matron to keep it a secret that he ever came back and after having a few drinks with Vash on a couch in front of the orphanage, he dies. Vash buries him there with his Cross Punisher, and that's it. He appears several times throughout the rest of the series as a ghost, haunting both Vash and Livio but disappears after Livio manages to stop Chronica from killing Vash and Knives in the last volume.

I'll be pulling him from shortly after his death, so he won't remember his time creeping around as a ghost
.
Special Abilities or Weapons: His abilities are vaguely described in the manga as “healing capabilities, strengthened bones, increased muscle strength, sharpened sensory nerves.” Basically, he can heal from minor to major life threatening wounds with a shorter recovery time than the average human but he isn’t Wolverine. If he gets shot in the head or heart, he’s dead. If he loses a limb, it isn’t going to grow back. He’s also stronger, faster and has damn better reflexes than someone in peak physical condition but he’s not invincible. He's able to punch Vash without breaking his hand and get punched in the face by Vash's fake metal arm and it only leaves a bruise, which disappears pretty fast. The regenerative powers can be amplified by use of vials filled with a drug but since he’s coming from post canon and all his stuff is gone, he's not gonna have access to those anyway. His hearing and sight seem to be above average, as well.

I figure most of that can be translated to Force powers, like Force Healing.

All that aside, he’s extremely skilled in the use of firearms. All those years as an assassin in training have taught him more than he needs to know about how to shoot a gun. Wolfwood also tends to be very perceptive of people and their emotions, even if he isn't sympathetic to them in the slightest.

Sect: Civilian

Job: Mechanic, most likely? IDK we'll see.

Samples:

First Person: [The post starts off as text, garbled and clearly not making a lick of sense. Someone's trying to figure out how to work the datapad (or trying to break it):]

asldjfkai2///kasj1290384mdsnfisd8912jrkefhc98sdhcn129345ndsnckasd.;;;;sdhi

[The button smashing eventually stops, switches to voice. You can hear a banging sound, followed by cursing:]

-hell won't this damn thing work-

[And even that eventually cuts off, replaced this time by video. A rather large nose attached to a face is looking at the screen as he keeps hitting it against something-probably a wall-only to stop when the screen cracks. His eyes go wide and he drops the datapad to the floor, cursing once again.]

Oh, shit. [And he quickly kicks it under the bed. Eventually the video feed times out.]

Third Person: Wolfwood never asked God for much of anything and didn’t plan to start any time soon-murdering bastards like himself didn’t have the right-but if he was in the praying kind of mood right now, it’d be for a town to appear on that horizon. A town means people, people mean a hotel, and a hotel means a room with a nice bed and a cool shower which means no more walking in the desert with three days and two nights worth of sweat, grime and sand covering his skin.

And how it clung everywhere; between his toes, in his hair, beneath chipped fingernails and stinging his face. It’s irritating as hell, but not what’s currently grating on his last nerve. No, that would be the guy in red walking in front of him and that damned blank look on his face. The same one he’s worn since Colagno. Doesn't matter that Vash is ahead of him by a few eet right now; Wolfwood can picture it all the same.

He tried a few times to bait him out of his funk. Start an argument, find something safe to bitch about that’ll aggravate him enough to get a response. But when Vash was determined to say in one of his moods, it was like talking with a wall. Except he got more of a reaction out of the wall.

Lord forbid he try to have a serious conversation, for a change. Maybe even talk about what had happened. “Ah, hey…” He'd start to say, only to snapped his mouth shut. What could he say in a situation like this? What comfort could he offer? ‘Sorry those assholes stoned and chased you outta town because your arm sprouted a feather catching bullet, but hey, you should get over it because if you don’t I’m gonna knock your fucking teeth out’ skipped over insensitive to just plain stupid. No, better just to keep his mouth shut before he put his foot in it again.

Wolfwood would’ve loved to pretend he was doing it for purely selfish reasons; like the silence was getting to him-pissing Vash off was just as much of a hobby to him as the blond gunman pissing him off was-or if he didn’t at least change that expression of his he was going to end up breaking the guy's nose and he looked pathetic enough as it was, but part of him wanted to help distract him. Give him five minutes where he wasn’t thinking himself in circles about how miserable everything was because he’d managed to get himself run out of town for being an inhuman freak.

He knew he didn’t really have the right to judge on that matter-he hasn’t been “normal” for some time now. Nothing anyone would notice right off the bat, unlike Vash. No, not unless they knew what to look for. The way he moved just a bit too quickly, how he noticed things a normal person wouldn’t. He was careful not to let people know what he was. A monster; a wolf dressed in sheep's clothing.

Still, it didn’t stop him from nearly killing that idiot just ahead of him; Vash with his back to him once again as if he could trust him. As if he could call him a friend. Wolfwood doubted he’d still act that way if he knew how close he came to putting a bullet through the back of his skull.

Out of all the times he chose to get a dose of the morals… Why then? He knew the answer, just didn’t like admitting it to himself. He genuinely liked the guy. Well, when he wasn’t pissing him off anyway. And maybe, just maybe… Maybe he could put this whole fucked up situation with Knives right and they could both come out of this alive.

But that was just wistful thinking on his part.

Anything Else: Ebon Hawks are a pretty sweet place to stash Hutt porn. Just sayin'.
