Working Out Details with Mama

Jul 05, 2005 22:54

It's nearly 6:00 am by the time we turn off the television, finished with our viewing of Some Like it Hot. Shellie and I stay up late into the night, well, early into the morning that is, watching old movies. Cary Grant, Marilyn Monroe, Elvis Presley. Visions dancing and singing in black and white cascaded through my thoughts as I finally made my ( Read more... )

I watched Becky walk off to her bedroom, and snuggled into the fold out bed. Tonight had been a lot of fun for me, a good change of pace. We'd watched a few of my favorite movies back to back, until our eyes started drooping and birds were chirping outside. I felt safer and more content than I'd felt for a few weeks.

I must have been more tired than I thought, because when I woke up it felt like afternoon. The hours I kept at Kadie's didn't allow me to sleep as late as I liked to. I yawned and got up, running my hands through the rats nest that was my hair. I'd have felt like a million bucks, if I didn't have a knot in my stomach from what I knew I was going to be putting Dwight through. I knew he'd be worried when I didn't show up at Kadie's, maybe even put Becky in a tight spot asking her questions she couldn't answer. It would just be for a little while though, let Jack cool his head off then maybe I could come back. Besides, Goldie looked like she was doing a good enough job of catching his attention. I wasn't sure if she was doing it all for my well being, or if she actually liked the guy.

I frown to myself, and curse my bad taste in men. As far as I could remember, Dwight had been one of the only exceptions. He was the one good thing I had right now, and I was screwing it up royally. I Didn't want to leave Dwight in the dark, but Jack wasn't giving me any choice but to leave town and keep my trap shut. If I wanted help keep Dwight's past in the past, my only choice was to bail. If I stayed, the questions wouldn't stop.

I closed my eyes tight, as if to stop these thoughts from coming in. I open them again, and breathe slowly looking down at my duffle bag. I decide to get dressed and put my mess of a hair into a ponytail, and pull on a pair of faded jeans and an old Rolling Stones t-shirt. I'm almost finished putting away the fold out bed, when I hear Becky calling me from her bedroom. "Yeah Becks, I'm up!" I call back sounding as cheery as possibly I can.

I smile as I walk out toward the living room, still decked out in my morning finest: an oversized t-shirt, messy hair and a bright smile. I am not surprised to see Shellie up and about, having not known what sort of a sleeper she was. However, it looked as if she had not gotten up all that long ago, so I wasn't too worried about just waking up myself.

"Mornin'," I chirp cheerily at her. "I jus' got off the phone, with mama." I glance over at my housemate as I make my way into my small kitchen. "She's happy to take you in, Shell. She'll be expectin' us in a few hours." I tilt my head slightly, taking in her dressed form with half a grin. "You want a shower before we head out? I got plenty of towels and the like .." I gesture toward her with one of the mixing bowls I have in hand. "You hungry at all? I can whip up some biscuits and gravy right quick." And I could. It was really one of the few things I could cook really well, having grown up in a southern oriented kitchen.

I smile at Becky, and give her a wave hello. I decided to bury my bad thoughts, and enjoy the good company. My smile becomes even wider, when Becky tells me all the plans are OK with her Mom.

I look down at my outfit, and pout jokingly to Becky's remark.

"You want a shower before we head out? I got plenty of towels and the like .."

"That bad, huh?" I laugh. I didn't think I looked too bad for a car ride, I wanted to be comfortable after all. "...I'll just grab a shower later. Don't think I smell too bad..." I chuckle. As for biscuits, I was all up for that. "...I'd LOVE some biscuits, can I help?"
