The smell of evil!

Oy... I finally made it home from work, so I can elaborate on this morning's post a bit more....

I've not slept well for the past three nights, mostly because I keep waking up hearing things outside my window. The first night I thought it might be dogs getting into the trash, and tried to ignore it. Only, it was Wednesday night and the trash had been picked up that day so there was no trash to get into... I looked outside as best I could through all the windows, but they were all fogged up because it's so cold outside at night. Didn't see any critters then or the next morning when I went to investigate. The second night I figured it must be a fox, because we've had a bit of a population explosion this year with the foxes. Looked around the next morning and didn't find anything but a couple pieces of garbage from somebody else's house... Odd, but not entirely unusual. But again last night I was kept awake with sounds outside my window. When I started my car this morning to defrost it before I had to go to work, I again looked around and didn't see much. Just another bit of trash that had been dragged over. So I decided to look inside the trash cans to see if maybe something was getting bits of loose trash from one of our cans... I looked inside and saw something grey and furry. My first reaction, of course, was "Aww, it's fuzzy!" But then I caught a wiff of possum stink... I hate possums. They invaded our house once, and I don't aim to let it happen again. So I got home from work, and sure enough, it's still there... I got a broom and banged on the can to try to scare it away, which I think just made the possum laugh at me... I tried poking it with the broom, and it hissed but did not attempt to vacate my trash can... I don't think it's stuck in there, but it hasn't left yet... I'll check again when the sun goes down all the way, but I'm not sure what I'll do if it can't get out. I can't get the can out of the bin without risking getting bitten, and there's no lid for that particular can, so I can't seal it in while I lift the can either... I could possibly flood the can with water, maybe let it swim out, but I don't know if those things swim, and I don't want to drown it even if it is in my territory... Meh. I suppose I'll just have to see if it can get out of the can by itself... I'll update tomorrow if there is any progress...

EDIT:
It's gone now. I checked on it after dark, and decided it was stuck since it hadn't left yet... And I didn't wanna kill it, but I didn't want rabies either... So I got a broom handle with a loop on the end, hooked it under the lip of the trash can, and used the edge of the wooden bin as a fulcrum to lever the can out from a safe distance. It worked better than I'd expected and I was able to set the can down gently and tip it over. I then ran behind my car in case an angry opossum decided to charge at me. ^_^; It didn't though. It eventually crawled out and looked back at me for a few minutes before it waddled away. I think it might have actually been grateful to be released from its plastic prison, which makes me happy. *is a dork* And I finally got some sleep! It didn't last as long as I'd have liked, but it wasn't interrupted by rustling noises from a possum in my trash can. That makes me very happy. ^_^
