Pointless ENGLISH

Mar 26, 2006 00:22

Okay, so I have to write these 5 journals for my English class about articles I've read about things regarding Travel and Tourism. And I'm pretty sure if Penny saw the sentence I just wrote, she'd fail me. Anyways, I wrote one journal entry on a night club called The Social and I thought it was pretty good, so I'm going to post it. And I'm not going to post the original article because I think it's just more fun this way.

Journal Entry #4
Article: Too cool: If you haven’t heard about The Social, you probably shouldn’t know by Steward, Karen.

This brief article is a review about the new nightclub called The Social. It is located on Queen St. W and is anything but a conventional nightclub. The club is different from most clubs - “out there” is probably the best phrase I can use to describe it. How else could you describe a club which has gay porn being broadcasted on the TV screens and people dancing with painted on pants?
This article did not really teach me anything new but more emphasized the fact of why I usually do not go to clubs on Queen West. Other than a few of their “interesting” features, The Social is no different from other clubs. It has a huge dance floor, florescent streaming lights, pumping music and a great, full service bar.
After reading this article, The Social looks like a place that I would not loose sleep over if I did not attend it. I’m a fairly reserved person and believe that no matter how wild the party is, everyone’s pants should stay on (something that rarely happens, apparently, at The Social). I do not really like wild parties but I would probably go check it out if I knew stars like The Killers and Fiest were going to be there, which the article states they drop by quite frequently.
Some of the words that Steward uses to describe The Social include “a misleading moniker for a place with such an exclusive mentality”, “kitschy décor”, “chatting is impossible, dancing unavoidable”, “an anything goes dresscode”, and of course, “painted on trousers”.
I’m not too sure if this article was exactly informative, but it was sure interesting! The article provides the basic location and phone number as well as discusses the ambiance of the place. However, the article fails to mention the cover charge as well as the prices of some of the more popular beverage options.
What I did like about this review was that Steward presented The Social to be a fun place (for those who like that kind of fun). I always like reading an article about a place when I can tell the reader had a blast experiencing it, and I can definitely tell that of this article. I also like how I can almost follow her reaction from the time she enters the place, to the time she leaves. She starts off the article with a few sly, sarcastic remarks but by the end, I get this image of her tearing up the dance floor! The only thing I did not like, and perhaps it is how it was printed, was the fact that the whole article was literally, a huge paragraph. I am not sure if this is how Steward intended her article to be presented, but it was a little hard to read, at times.
What I would do differently, aside from formatting it, would be to discuss more about their bar and if they offer anything to eat. The Social does not become a dance club until past 11 p.m. but is open as a bar beforehand. As well, I would include the price of cover, if they have any special discounted nights and of course, if girls get in for free. I don’t think I would actually want to pay to get into this place!

Speaking of clubs, got out of meeting PG tonight. Yay!
