(I already posted this in MySpace, but I needed to post it here too.)
We had to put our dog to sleep on Friday afternoon.
He ended up running loose outside when Eric brought him out (Wednesday afternoon). Well sometimes that happens, and he always comes back after a couple hours, so we didn't worry much about it. When he came back that evening, I brought him into the house and he looked disoriented and confused, and he seemed a little wobbly, like he was off-balance. The next morning, he threw up all over our bed, so Eric took him to the vet. The vet said he was fine, and that it looked like all he did was eat something that upset his stomach. Later that night, I walked outside to give him some fresh water, and he was in such bad shape, he could barely stand up. His back legs kept giving out on him and he was shaking. I brought him into the house and stayed up with him all night. I thought he was going to die during the night. His breathing would go from really heavy to really shallow, and his chest area kept twitching. We brought him back to the vet in the morning (Friday), they did bloodwork, and found that he had antifreeze poisoning. The ingrediants in antifreeze crystalize the kidneys and destroy the liver, so unless you catch them in the act of slurping it up, there's pretty much nothing you can do. We made the tough decision of putting him to sleep, and it was the first time I've seen Eric bawl. It was so hard. We were in the room with him the vet put him down.
I'll miss that silly dog. He was only 3 years old.
RIP Kermit, I love you.
