My biggest wish for Christmas was gifted to me on the 23rd, in the form of a deposit check given to the landlord. On the 30th or 31st, I'll go in to sign the lease and will then spend the first weekend of 2010 moving in to my new home.
For as heartbroken as I was over the Jena St. place and it being given away from under me,
I'm much happier with this place (and at $200 less a month, to boot!). I had this excited feeling going in to the place, and I had a hard time not bursting out of my seams when
uproar and I went to view it.
It's perfect, and all I could have wanted in a New Orleans home: historic New Orleans touches like fireplaces and crown molding, but renovated; lots of windows; an amazing and large kitchen; a washer & dryer; space for a separate bedroom and office; lots of storage space. It's also got my dream features/aka not deal breakers of central heat/ac and being all electric.
It also came with the bonuses of a backyard, a storage room, and young owners who live full time in Houston and use the other side as their "vacation as much as possible" home. They are also cat owners, and made an exception for 1 female, neutered cat to live next door (as opposed to no pets).
The neighborhood is run down and mostly old homeowners (who run the drug dealers out of the neighborhood). It seems quiet. It's in the "bubble" for Mardi Gras, but accessible by interstate. Mid-way between work and the French Quarter, and skipping distance from bars. (Also, it is not too close to Juan's and crack tacos, which was something I worried about in certain neighborhoods.)
I'll have lovely neighbors--
theredpanther is about 4-5 blocks away, and
madbluenimbus seems to be a mere 2-3 blocks away (side note: apparently I like to live by redheads).

Christmas Eve was lovely, spent with
niugnep and
uproar while we played the Wii and ate too many cookies, and then headed for Flanagan's for a potluck (which was on the wrong day). Then I hopped over to Molly's for time with
theredpanther and Christmas cynicism. We drank too much and had her favorite bartender all to ourselves.
I spent a lovely Christmas dinner with the McCay households, eating a delicious couqe au vin with beautiful salad, roasted potatoes, and squash. My body was quite content with the switch from starches to delish meats and veggies. Baking with Mallory a few weekends ago reminds me how much I miss and enjoy cooking & real food-- I can't wait to be back in my own kitchen again.
For New Orleanians: Do I go Cox TV or Direct TV? To be honest, I wanted AT&T U-Verse, but it's not available in the region yet...
