For those of you that don’t watch PBS. Abraham Lincoln was gay or at least that is premise of a newly released book entitled, “The Intimate World of Abraham Lincoln." And personally I’m fascinated. Fascinated by a society that is obsessed with all the personal details, the gossip, the “that’s none of your business” business. The PBS special was a train wreck from which I wasn’t able to turn away. The romantically bloody Civil War that lead this particular commentator to his love of history and men, as well as a strong desire to prove that both Lincoln and Whitman were gay. These two men were amazingly brilliant Americans…not something we get to say very often anymore. They were stead-fast in their beliefs. Intellectuals and yet common men. They are a part of our history. What they left us with was not necessarily insight into their personal lives, and opinions, but very detailed and impressive notations on their public lives and opinions. Which seems cheapened by sensationalizing their lives.

We have Paris Hilton for sensation, to see her knocked off her pedestal once again. I guess I prefer my Whitman on his literary pedestal. I enjoy seeing Lincoln as regal and impressive, not scandalous.

But hey maybe that’s just me.

And just because I’m full of useless knowledge…the author of this tabloid was a fellow college of Alfred Kinsey. He loved his scandal as well.
