NOT a bit like the Bratty OC character that made her famous, Hollywood A-lister Mischa Barton has taken her laid-back attitude to Paris where she stays sane by the Seine.

Mischa Barton is running late, but it has nothing to do with diva-esque theatrics thrown by the 22-year-old actor who has reluctantly lived with the twin-edged sobriquet of ‘Hollywood It girl’ for the past five years.

When her long, lean frame strides in for Sunday Magazine’s fashion shoot in a non-descript inner-city warehouse, trailing Nuala, her Irish mother-cum-travelling companion, as well as Shane, a locally hired minder to keep the paparazzi at bay, she’s business-like and apologetic.

It’s 10.30am on Anzac Day and Barton, who is staying in a mid-town hotel, was due for a 10am start, but got held up in traffic as proud soldiers marched through the city streets to commemorate one of the most significant days in Australia’s military history.

“It was great to see part of the march - incredible,” Barton says in a deep voice mature beyond her years.

“I want to play two-up later.” She’s been in Australia for less than 24 hours but she’s done her homework.

First, though, to business and Barton, ever professional, subjects herself to the familiar routine of hair and make-up before parading six outfit changes.

Two days later, we reconvene for our interview in the hotel where she’s been staying and Barton is sitting cross-legged on the bed, a familiar pose for young actors.

Thankfully, she doesn’t subscribe completely to the stage-managed image machine and far from presenting as a fresh-faced ingenue/girl-next-door, she’s beautifully made up with her caramel mane impeccably groomed.

Barton reveals that she has made the most of her short time in Australia - although, sadly, she was too late for two-up.

A little more than 12 hours earlier at 2am she was at the after-party for the MTV Australia Awards - where she was a presenter - and she’s also managed to cram in four of Sydney’s best restaurants as well as see a live performance by fellow actor Juliette Lewis, and her band The Licks.

Tomorrow, she’ll be front-row at the Kirrily Johnston parade at Rosemount Australian Fashion Week where her every utterance on the local fashion scene will be recorded by the cameras.

After all, the young woman who became a household name playing rebellious brat Marissa Cooper in The OC, is something of a style icon and recently released an eponymous handbag and accessories range in the UK and Japan (and soon, Oz).

“People always come to me (and ask), ‘Are you going to do a fashion line?’ and it was an easier segue into it, to do something like handbags and grow from there as opposed to aiming too high,” Barton says.

“I like a vintagey look, but I also did a wide range of things because not everybody has my taste, obviously.”

It’s difficult to imagine how Barton finds the time to design her own range, given that last year she made four films and, in March, finished another, a thriller called Homecoming in which she plays a psychopath and that was co-produced by her own film company.

On top of that, she recently bought an apartment in Paris overlooking the Seine.

“I’m 22 now and I’ve always wanted a place in Europe while I’m still quite young and it was either London or Paris.

"I was born in London and I have a sister (Zoe, a barrister) who lives there, but Paris is very close to London and it’s a lot more private,” she says.

“And it’s just a bit more laid-back. I just find Paris a nice, creative place to live. It’s just so nice to wake up there and say, ‘Yes, today I can go and buy a loaf of bread and a coffee.’”

Paris is a long way from the family homes in Los Angeles and New York where she has lived with her parents and younger sister, Hania, for the past 16 years.

Her mother was a photographer and her English father, Paul, was in the financial industry when he took up a lucrative position in New York.

The family upped stakes from London when Barton was six, and all but her older sister, Zoe, remain in the United States. France offers Barton a pleasant reprieve from the paparazzi.

“I definitely think LA takes the cake. I mean, they just sit outside your house.

"It’s just the way they do it now, I find it so uncool. I, like, prefer the days of the ’60s and ’70s or ’80s when (stars) were photographed in different ways - as style icons.

"It wasn’t trashy; (photographers) weren’t looking for dirt.

"That’s what’s great about places like Paris. It’s really very private and if there’s a photographer, he doesn’t get in your face and embarrass you.”

A few days later, the Australian paparazzi would be the cause of grief when Barton and Nuala holidayed an exclusive resort in Queensland.

Jamie Fawcett, the same photographer who battled Nicole Kidman in the courts, snapped Barton sunbathing topless, and unflattering pictures of her showing cellulite on her thighs were subsequently published on the cover of a weekly magazine.

An angry Barton called Fawcett a “ridiculous human being”. “I’ve never abhorred anyone more,” she told reporters.

The paparazzi have been an ever-present part of her life since she became an ‘overnight’ success at 16 in The OC, in which she starred for three years before exiting by way of a fatal car accident in 2006.

“I was really surprised. I’ve been doing films since I was 11 and you don’t get any attention like that.”

The scrutiny intensified in December when she was arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence. She was held in custody and released on US$10,000 bail and found herself in the ignominious position of having her mug shot plastered all over the net.

In February, she was charged with drunk driving, marijuana possession and driving without a licence.

“The whole thing was a disaster,” says the actor who has openly taken responsibility for her actions.

“It wasn’t my finest moment and you make mistakes. When you’re young you do dumb things every now and then. As irresponsible as I was, you don’t grow if you don’t kind of live life, too. You just do your best.”

Barton understood the tidal wave of interest given the jailhouse appearances of other ‘it girls’ yet says she did not like the “firestorm” of comparisons “to other young actresses” in whose boat she was loaded. “Who wants to be compared like that?”

As for her time in the police cells, Barton shudders. Will she be there again? “Oh no,” comes her emphatic and instant reply. She has learnt her lesson. She adds: “Not going anywhere near a car.”
At least the worst is behind her. Barton pleaded no contest in an LA court in April - the drug charge was dropped - and was fined around US$2000 and put on a three-year probation.

“It’s done and dusted.

"I feel as if I’ve grown from it and I’m very glad the way it’s turned out - being my first offence.”

Barton, the only member of her family to act, began treading the boards at eight in Slavs!, a satire by award-winning playwright Tony Kushner for which she won a positive review in The New York Times.

Her first film at the age of 11 was 1997’s indie drama Lawn Dogs, which she followed with small roles in Notting Hill and The Sixth Sense.

“I’ve always gone with the flow in my career. I mean, I stumbled into acting,” she says. “It’s kind of a shocking thing that happened and it’s what brought me out of my shell. I used to be quite a shy person.

“You know, there have been times when I’ve thought, well I don’t have to act forever… Like this is great for now.

"When I was in school, there were tonnes of other options. I applied for college and it was just the way the cards fell that I ended up doing The OC and it took off. I wasn’t even expecting it to be a hit.

"I just took the part because I thought it would be a good, paid job and a very comfy role.”

Acting has kept her busy since leaving the series. She did her first nude scene in the recently released Richard Attenborough film, Closing the Ring, and was surprised - angered even - at the fuss it caused.

She calls the brief scene a “tragic moment” when a young woman offers her virginity to her boyfriend who is going to war.

“I get annoyed when people harp on about silly things like that. Sometimes (nudity) is appropriate. I wouldn’t take my clothes off for just anything. It’s all carefully done.”

Barton has four more films in the wings: a drama Don’t Fade Away; a horror movie, Walled In; a comedy co-starring Bruce Willis, Assassination of a High School President; and another drama.

You and I, directed by the critically acclaimed Roland Joffé.

In the meantime, a return to the stage is not out of the question, nor is developing more films for her production company.

Then there’s her commercial endorsements and accessories line.

And, of course, Barton has to find time for her relatively new boyfriend, Taylor Locke, from US band Rooney.

They met when the 23-year-old musician helped her buy a guitar.

“It’s really good, it’s pretty new,” she says of the relationship. “I’m learning to play the guitar. I love music; it’s a huge passion.

"I see more live shows than anyone I know.”

With Locke on tour, she’ll have plenty more reasons to go.

Mischa Barton Explains Her Paris Move

Mischa Barton will always have Paris - the city, not the Hilton.

The former O.C. star has set up house in the City of Light, making it easier than ever to check out the glitz and glamour at the Cannes Film Festival.

"I'm living in Paris right now so I thought I would come down for a few days," the British-born actress told PEOPLE at the Chopard and Alberta Ferretti Opening Gala on Wednesday night. (She has two movies at the festival, including You and I.)

So why Paris? "No reason," the 22-year-old said, shrugging her shoulders, "I've just always wanted to move there. I'm enjoying some time off."

Since arriving in the south of France on Tuesday, Barton said she'd been doing some press. But mostly she's just enjoying the Riviera vibe.

"I've been coming here since I was 12, so I know the deal," she said. "It's always good fun."

Maybe a bit too much fun.

"It's pretty manic, " Barton admitted. "I'm hoping it calms down a bit."
