Hyukjae and his best friend, Donghae, were sitting on the yard of their school, Seoul X High School. The weather was mild, few clouds on the blue sky drifted occasionally over the sun. The wind made sure that the temperature never raised very high, and just stayed at perfect degree. Over all, it was very pretty spring afternoon.
Hyukjae opened his lunch box, and fished up some sweets - all flavour strawberry of course, his absolute number one favourite. Donghae’s eyes brightened as he saw all the goods Hyukjae put to his lap -one after one. It was like an endless stream of candies. And Donghae loved candy!
“Hyukkiieeee~” Donghae whined loudly. Hyukjae turned his surprised eyes to Donghae and gulped.
‘No, not the puppy-eyes!' his mind screamed.
“W-what, Donghae?” Hyukjae asked, of course very well aware of what Donghae wanted.
Donghae opened his round, brown eyes even wider, making them glisten even more. Hyukjae gulped soundly. He decided to give up, because he couldn’t fight against the puppy-eyes-attack, and quickly handed one strawberry lollipop to the blue haired guy.
Donghae grinned super happily, He congratulated himself on the well executed plan. He had always known Hyukjae’s weak spots. Donghae tore off the paper over the red lollipop, and pushed it in to his mouth. After tasting it he immediately smiled blissfully.
Hyukjae next to him chuckled, loving to see his friend so happy. He wasn’t sad at all because of his loss.
“Is it any good?” Hyukjae asked, taking one lollipop for himself too, because he had so many of them. When he tasted the lollipop, he also smiled contentedly.
“Sooooooo gooood!” Donghae laughed, showing his trademark peace sign. Hyukjae nodded. The lollipop indeed was tasty, maybe the best he had ever eaten. And he had eaten many lollipops, trust me.
The two boys enjoyed the rest of Hyukjae’s sweets, laughing and talking about everyday stuff, until the school bell clang, indicating that the half-hour lunch break was now over. Students around Hyukjae and Donghae whined sadly and started to stroll inside the school building. Hyukjae started to get up too, but Donghae’s hand that grabbed his, stopped him.
Hyukjae looked questioningly at Donghae, who gestured him to sit down. Hyukjae complied slowly, wondering what was the matter.
“What is it?” Hyukjae asked once he had settled himself down next to Donghae again.
“Do you remember what day it is?” Donghae just asked from Hyukjae, who started to think. He didn’t need much time before it hit him.
“Oh, your big brother left 3 years ago, right?” Hyukjae asked silently, understanding worry written all over his soft face.
Donghae just nodded. Hyukjae didn’t think twice and hugged Donghae warmly, and Donghae wrapped instantly his arms around the other. He buried his face to Hyukjae’s shoulder.
“Want me to come over, then?” Hyukjae asked, and again Donghae just nodded, not trusting his voice to speak. Hyukjae hugged him tighter, wanting the other to know that he would always be there for him. Donghae seemed to get his un-said words, as he mumbled a ‘thank you’ against Hyukjae’s shirt.
The bell rang again - now it was the last seconds to get to the classes. Hyukjae patted Donghae’s back.
“We need to get going, Hae”, Hyukjae said. When Donghae nodded, Hyukjae pulled away from him and stood up, offering a hand to Donghae to help him to stand up. Donghae gladly accepted it. Then they gathered their stuff and started heading towards the classes.
The school day went on smoothly. Hyukjae and Donghae listened to their teachers talking, bored Donghae yawning every now and then. Hyukjae tried to look extra interested because he could see that the teachers were having a bad day, and he hoped to cheer them up a little. The reason behind the angry teachers was that just at the break someone had broken the window of the boys’ toilet.
The whole school had heard of the incident by now, but no one really talked about it. Actually, it felt like everyone was avoiding the topic. It made Hyukjae suspicious. He wanted to know who had done it, and why no one talked about it. But he let it be, because he didn’t like bothering people with his questions.
Donghae and Hyukjae’s last lesson was history, and their teacher Mr. Jung, decided to bravely bring up the window-breaking incident.
“So, I guess everyone already knows what happened during at the lunch break?” teacher asked, the atmosphere in the class room thickened suddenly. No one said nothing, few persons nodded slightly.
“So, about it. Currently we have no idea who the culprit was. If you have any information, by all means come and tell the teachers. We have to get a new glass for the window, and it’s expensive. The culprit must pay for his acts!” Mr. Jung raised his voice, making everyone on the class room flinch. Mr. Jung cleared his throat, ashamed that he had lost his composure so easily.
“So if someone knows something, do tell it”, Mr. Jung then continued, now with a steady, normal voice.
Hyukjae noticed that everyone on the class was glancing at each others, like they knew something. But no one said a thing.
Mr. Jung sighed, and Hyukjae didn’t like seeing him like that. So he got up.
“Mr. Jung! I will be sure to do my everything to find who did it!” Hyukjae announced loudly. Everyone turned their heads at him, but he didn’t even flinch. His eyes were fixed to their teacher, who looked at him surprised. Then he smiled, knowing that he could trust Hyukjae. After all Hyukjae was the one, who always would take part on every history project, and was good student.
“Thank you, Hyukjae”, Mr. Jung said, and motioned Hyukjae to sit down. “But now we have to get to the World War II....”
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
“What an Earth made you say that, Hyukjae?!” Donghae asked from Hyukjae, who was busy trying to close his over full bag. Hyukjae answered him with a shrug. Donghae sighed.
“You know that those who did it, must be strong. The glass of the window was super thick!” Donghae said, his voice shaking slightly from fear.
Hyukjae looked at his worried friend, just smiling reassuringly.
“It’s okay, I’m not afraid of getting hurt, Hae. I don’t want the teachers to be sad anymore” Hyukjae said. He frowned; only the thought of others being unhappy saddened him too.
Donghae, who knew his best friend by heart, patted his shoulder.
“I know I can’t change your mind about this, but be careful. And anyway, you promised you would come to my place after school, remember?” Donghae asked.
“Of course I remember. I’ll come back to school in the evening, and try to find some evidence”, Hyukjae told. He picked up his bag, and said: “Shall we go then?”
Donghae nodded, still eyeing Hyukjae worriedly, but saying nothing.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Donghae opened the door to his house, letting Hyukjae to step in first. Then he followed him, and they threw their bags to the floor. Hyukjae smiled, inhaling the familiar scent of Donghae’s house.
“Do you want something to eat?” Donghae asked as they walked to Donghae’s room. Hyukjae smiled and shook his head.
“Not hungry at the moment”, he said.
Silence fell between them, and Hyukjae felt that for the first time ever, it was slightly awkward. Donghae was fidgeting almost un-visibly, not looking at Hyukjae. Hyukjae guessed that it was because of Donghae’s big brother.
“Umm.. I think I’ll make something for myself only then”, Donghae muttered and went to the kitchen, leaving Hyukjae alone to the room. Hyukjae ruffled his red hair, feeling sorry for his best friend.
He hadn’t been Donghae’s friend yet when his brother had left Donghae’s family to pursue his dream of being a singer. Donghae said that his father and his brother, whose name Donghae wouldn’t tell, had had a huge fight, and his father had said that Donghae’s brother wasn’t his child anymore. And so he had just left, saying that he would never return.
Hyukjae was sure that Donghae’s father had been just worried for his son, because the world of entertainers was harsh. But of course he should have never said that he wasn’t his son anymore.
So, ever since the day Donghae’s brother had left the family, no one had heard a word from him. Hyukjae knew that Donghae was worried to death over him. And Hyukjae wanted to help him, even though he wasn’t really sure how.
‘Maybe I should help him cook...’ Hyukjae thought, and stood up from the bed he had sat when Donghae went to kitchen.
Hyukjae was about to go to the kitchen when he heard loud voices talking behind the front door. Hyukjae’s suspicion grew too big, so he sneaked to the door, and pressed his ear against it.
“....come in!” another voice said - or more like pleaded. Hyukjae knew that voice - it was Donghae’s little brother, Sungmin. Hyukjae had seen him only few times, he really wasn’t home a lot. And Donghae didn’t like talking about him. Hyukjae really wondered why. He also wondered who Sungmin was talking to.
“You owe me one, then”, another voice said. This voice was deeper than Sungmin’s, and it sounded angry and annoyed. Hyukjae had never heard that voice before, but still it felt somehow familiar.
‘Maybe someone from our school?’ Hyukjae thought.
“Of course! Let’s go in!” Sungmin’s happy voice made Hyukjae withdraw from the door, but he wasn’t too fast in getting away. The door swung open, revealing Sungmin, a short boy with brown hair. He was standing with tall boy, who looked like a gangster to Hyukjae.
Both boys looked at the blushing Hyukjae, who was slowly stepping backwards. Sungmin’s surprised expression quickly turned into a happy one, when he recognised Hyukjae.
“Hyukjae-hyung!” Sungmin shouted, and Hyukjae smiled at him awkwardly. Since the first time they had met, Sungmin had immediately liked him, hugging him every time they saw. So now Hyukjae of course waited for a hug, but surprisingly enough, it didn’t come. Instead Sungmin’s face hardened when his eyes spotted a figure behind Hyukjae.
“Donghae”, Sungmin just said, and when Hyukjae turned around, he was met by a pair of angry eyes of his best friend.
“Sungmin”, Donghae said as plainly as Sungmin had said his name. “And I see you brought Kyuhyun with you.”
“Yes, he is my best friend, like Hyukjae-hyung is yours!” Sungmin defended himself against Donghae’s judging eyes.
“There this slight difference here, you see, Sungmin. One, you like Hyukjae, two, I don’t like Kyuhyun”, Donghae said, stepping few steps closer to Sungmin. Sungmin immediately scooted closer to the tall boy, Kyuhyun, like wanting to protect him.
“Why can’t I bring him to comfort me? This day is hard for me too! And if you remember, Kyuhyun-hyung was there when Jungsu left!” Sungmin yelled.
“Don’t ever say his name under this roof!” Donghae yelled at the same time when Kyuhyun said: “I’m not here to comfort you, Sungmin.”
Hyukjae felt awful. So much angriness and sadness in the room made him feel sick. He had to do something.
“Please stop fighting!” he shouted, stepping between the fighting brothers. Everyone’s eyes were on him instantly. “This day is hard for you both, so can’t you please make a truce even for this evening? Let’s do something together, and forgot all the angriness.”
Sungmin and Donghae stared at each other for a while, but eventually they sighed and nodded.
“Okay, but only if Kyuhyun will leave”, Donghae said, gaining a loud ‘no!’ from his little brother. Hyukjae sighed.
“Please, Donghae. I don’t know why you hate him, but please allow him to stay,” Hyukjae said, now watching only Donghae, sending him reassuring looks.
“I don’t need anyone to plead for me”, Kyuhyun said, glaring at Hyukjae’s back. Hyukjae flinched at his words.
“Well, I think you need”, Donghae said, glaring at Kyuhyun, now even more angrier at the boy because he had made his dear Hyukjae hurt.
“If no one wants me here, I might as well as go”, Kyuhyun said, and Hyukjae was shocked at how little he actually seemed to care if Donghae hated him.
“No! Please stay, hyung!” Sungmin pleaded, grabbing the helm of Kyuhyun’s shirt. Kyuhyun was already turned towards the closed door, and Sungmin wasn’t strong enough to make him stop.
Hyukjae, who didn’t like Sungmin’s sad whines and useless tries on stopping Kyuhyun from going, said: “Yes, please stay, Kyuhyun-ssi. For Sungmin.”
Everyone turned their gazes at Hyukjae. Hyukjae blushed at the sudden attention he got. Especially Kyuhyun’s piercing stare made the red hair fidget nervously.
Something in the boy, Kyuhyun, made Hyukjae puzzled. He had piercings in his face: one under his bottom lip and one on his right brow. Hyukjae, who had never seen such young boys with so many piercings, found himself eyeing the small balls on Kyuhyun’s face a little bit scared.
But what scared Hyukjae more, were Kyuhyun’s eyes. His whole attitude and his every word were almost bored, or without any emotion apart from annoyance. But his eyes were alive. Hyukjae wasn’s sure what he saw there, but it was different than annoyance, or angriness, or boredom.
Donghae’s hands clenched into tight fists when he saw how Kyuhyun and Hyukjae kept on staring at each other. His angriness was now in a whole different levels. Not because he hated Kyuhyun - of course it was partly because of that - but because Kyuhyun and Sungmin had ruined his plans.
Donghae had planned for this evening for almost half an year, ever since he realized his feelings. He knew what he felt was wrong. He has lived his whole childhood in a strict Christian family, where this was absolutely wrong. But Donghae couldn’t care less. He now knew why Jungsu, his big brother, had left them, and he understood him perfectly.
Donghae would give up everything too, if he had to. For Hyukjae.
And now his confession to Hyukjae couldn’t be done, because of the two boys standing right in front of him, and the other one of the boys eyeing his - yes, his - Hyukjae intently.
‘I have to do something’, Donghae thought.
“Hyukjae, do you know who you are asking to stay here, with us?” Donghae asked, his voice poisonous, and his eyes staying on Kyuhyun all the time.
“Huh?” Hyukjae startled. He had been lost into Kyuhyun’s black eyes, and Donghae’s angry voice had brought him back to Earth harshly. “What are you talking about, Donghae?”
Donghae turned his gaze to Hyukjae, his face immediately softened. He couldn’t even imagine talking to Hyukjae angrily - even if he wasn’t angry at him.
“He is the one who broke the window in school.”
“What?!”
A threatening, heavy silence fell to the house. Donghae looked at shocked Hyukjae sadly, but inside he was happy. Hyukjae had to know what Kyuhyun was capable of doing. Sungmin should also know that his best friend was evil.
But Sungmin already knew what Kyuhyun had done, because he had been with him. And he hadn’t even tried to stop his angry friend from doing what he did. He wanted to tell it to Donghae, to make him see that he souldn’t care or worry about him.
Kyuhyun was fuming. Angriness had filled his deep eyes, and he was about to hurt that bastard Donghae, but decided not to. Instead he used the sudden lack of Sungmin’s attention to open the door and get out of the house.
Sungmin noticed Kyuhyun gone, and ran after him. Donghae didn’t even see the two of them leaving. His eyes were glued to Hyukjae.
Hyukjae was looking straight in front of him, but he saw nothing. He didn’t really know what to think.
‘I was at the same room with the one who made all the teachers sad. I even talked to him. I wanted him to stay!' Hyukjae’s mind screamed, and he started to shake visibly.
Donghae hugged Hyukjae. He had wanted Kyuhyun to go, yes, but he wanted Hyukjae to be happy.
“Do you want to do something? I made us ramen and--”
“No, I’m sorry. I have to go”, Hyukjae said, pushing Donghae away. He immediately felt sorry for treating his best friend like that. “I’m so sorry, Donghae”, he apologised and hugged quickly Donghae. However, before the older had time to wrap his arms around Hyukjae, Hyukjae was already at the door.
“I’m going to tell principal who did it”, Hyukjae said, and flashed a quick smile at Donghae. Then he went away.
Donghae sighed. He had gathered all his courage for this day. And it had all been for nothing. Hyukjae still didn’t know Donghae had a crush on him.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Hyukjae walked toward the high school. He tried to think of everything else than Kyuhyun. He tried to remind himself of what Kyuhyun had done. Probably all of the incidents that there had been at the school - graffiti at the school wall, broken sinks, messed up classrooms etc - maybe they all were Kyuhyun’s work.
Hyukjae tried to do everything to make himself forget.
To forget that, even for a second, he had thought that Kyuhyun was handsome. Hyukjae wanted to forget that he almost fell for the guy - fell for the devil.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
“Mr. Cho Kyuhyun, please report to the principal’s office immediately. I repeat, Cho Kyuhyun, come to the principal’s office immediately.”
Hyukjae shook on the couch on principal’s room. He was scared, but he was also pretty sure Kyuhyun wouldn’t come. Hyukjae was sure that Kyuhyun knew why he was being called.
On the one hand, Hyukjae didn’t want Kyuhyun to come, but on the other hand, he wanted him to come so he could pay for the window. Hyukjae din’t want the teacher’s to be sad anymore.
Ten minutes went with no Kyuhyun. Hyukjae was already giving up, and the principal was sighing deeply, when the door to the office slammed open. Kyuhyun had arrived, and he didn’t look happy.
But, Hyukjae made a note, Kyuhyun didn’t exactly look angry either. It made Hyukjae sigh in relief silently. At least he wouldn’t die tomorrow by Kyuhyun’s hand, like he had feared.
“You called me?” Kyuhyun asked, still not angry.
Principal nodded.
“I think you know why you are here”, he said. Kyuhyun said nothing, but Hyukjae knew he knew what principal wanted to talk about.
“You need to pay for that window, Mr. Cho. And do you know how expensive it is?” principal said.
“No, I don’t know how expensive it is, but even if it was cheap, I wouldn’t have money to pay for it”, Kyuhyun said, his voice full of boredom.
“Then why you did it? And I’m sure you have done most of the other vandalism here” principal asked, and Hyukjae nodded. So he had quessed right about Kyuhyun. But he also wanted to know why the other had broke the window.
“No reason. But I can’t pay for it. You should see my files. It reads there”, Kyuhyun said, shrugging. It felt like he didn’t even mind that he had no money. Hyukjae found himself disappointed at Kyuhyun’s answer.
“I am very aware of your financial situation, Mr. Cho”, principal said.
“I know that even if we forced you to pay it during the years, you wouldn’t stop breaking other windows. All the criminals are like that - punishments don’t change them. So that’s why I believe in teaching. I have an idea”, principal said. Both Hyukjae and Kyuhyun raised their brows questioningly. “Mr. Lee Hyukjae here will help you to get on the right path. He will be your tutor from now on.”
“WHAT?” both Kyuhyun and Hyukjae yelled. Hyukjae stared shocked at the principal who just smiled at him. Kyuhyun glared at Hyukjae, his eyes full of hate.
“I hope that it’s okay, Hyukjae. You are the kindest student I have ever met, and you if anyone can help Kyuhyun to stop the evildoing. Please, accept it”, principal pleaded.
Principal’s eyes that had lost all hope hit the right spot in Hyukjae, who nodded reluctantly.
“I’ll do it, then”, Hyukjae said. Then he turned to Kyuhyun, and continued: “But I want you to know that I don’t do it for you, but for this school and for our principal.”
Kyuhyun snorted, but his eyes never left Hyukjae. It made Hyukjae look away from him nervously.
“Then it’s settled. I’ll change your timetables so you’ll have all the same lessons”, principal said, completely missing the tension between Kyuhyun and Hyukjae. “You may go now, Hyukjae, Kyuhyun.”
Hyukjae sighed as he followed Kyuhyun out of the office. He had no idea where he had put his head into. He loved helping people, but somehow he felt like he couldn’t change Kyuhyun no matter how hard he tried. But he couldn’t let everyone down. Principal trusted in him, so he should at least try.
Hyukjae lifted his head, and looked at Kyuhyun’s back few metres away from him, walking fast in the hallway. Kyuhyun seemed to sense Hyukjae’s stare as he stopped and turned around to see him.
“I hope you know that I will make your life living hell”, Kyuhyun said, and then started walking again.
Hyukjae just sighed, following Kyuhyun’s steps.
‘This is going to be hard.’
