Oh hay flist D: Um I swear everyone only uses LJ sporadically lately lol. Is it because a lot of people transferred over to the 140 characters or less social networks? Sometimes you don't want to take the time to write out a whole entry about mundane kinda stuff. I'm more active over on FB D:
Anyway so I was watching Mad Men last night and the episode was completely brutal, I don't think any other show on tv has this many unlikeable characters on it, and its not even on the level on which you tend to hate most tv characters, that being that they make really stupid decisions or show a general lack of intelligence and foresight for the sake of plot development. Mad Men characters are just really selfish and cruel people.
Recently Don Draper was voted
the most influential man from AskMen.com, and I was like ... so a bunch of douchebags look up to a man that:
-lies to everyone about his identity
-basically stole someone else's identity
-lies and cheats on his wife
-is completely selfish and self indulgent
His human flaws are what make him so relevant to men today. He is by turns a chain-smoking, drinking-in-the-office emblem of a bygone age, and an unusually real, earnest human being who illustrates the struggles modern men know all too well.
So basically Askmen.com wish they could get away with all the bullshit Don does? Granted I think modern men do struggle to define their own masculinity, but Don's version of that is not something to aspire too. Its an archetype I think few modern men could actually live up, I mean how many guys today can support 2 kids and a wife on a single income? To be honest they should be looking more to the Barack Obama end of the spectrum, a man who advocates personal responsibility in parenthood and the family. The comments on the site are kind of hilarious, because a lot of people are baffled by this selection and wonder wtf Don Draper has contributed to society? What has he supposedly influenced men to do? Plus very few people actually watch this show, you can't be truly influential if you don't have mass appeal as say our fucking President! D:
A lot of Mad Men viewers totally buy into the myth of Don and its kind of sickening to be honest. On last night's episode the Don Draper character showed his homophobia and now everyone is like OMG DON IS SUCH A BASTARD! But when he was cheating on his wife, running away from his family, he was totally just hot and charming, because his wife is an ice cold Queen anyways and she ~deserves~ it. STFU internet D: But being homophobe is totally unforgivable ~.~ I think they excuse his misogyny because "oh that's just how the times were" but that's just the times were regarding attitudes towards homosexuals, but somehow that's even worse than his contempt and disrespect for his wife.
I also watched Dexter, and online comments regarding Dexter's wife Rita are disturbing too. Frankly watching this show is an exercise is moral relativism haah, but um people are OMG HE SHOULD KILL RITA! SHE IS SO ANNOYING! I mean sure she's annoying as fuck, but the glee with which people advocate violence against her is kinda disturbing.
Californication also has a rather flawed lead male character in the form of Hank Moody, BUT at least Hank is aware of the fact that he's flawed and has issues with women and commitment, but at least he tries to be a good Dad and doesn't think his shit doesn't stink like Don. And well he doesn't kill people like Dexter lol. Hank is another male character you see guys gushing about but to be honest I have little faith that they get Hank, they might just see a womanizer who bangs hot chicks and that's the extent to which they admire him and miss all the other aspects of his personality and his self awareness, none of which are reflected in the following youtube clip.
This clip from season 2 is so fucking funny and totally NSFW! The female cook is supposed to be like an annoying Rachel Ray-type, Hank is played by David Duchovny, the other character in the scene is Lou Ashby, he's like a retired rockstar that Hank is writing a book about.

The writing on this show kind of amazes me, it has really dark humor, and the topics they engage in are ones you probably won't see anywhere else on tv lol, like last week's theme which dealt with women's dark rape fantasies.
Anyway yea male archetypes on tv!! I need to go get some soup, its supposed to be 40 degrees on thursday, fucking hell D:
