Almost in tears

And my son is.

The situation - my 11 year old started 6th grade, jr high this year.  He's been taking meds since the second grade, and is very smart. Reads way above his grade level, etc.  Last year we set up an IEP that basically meant he needs extra help from his teacher in recording what homework he is expected to do, extra time in tests, and lots of communication between teacher and parents.

But his handwriting is a mess, he is totally overwhelmed by the transition, and we are getting little to no cooperation from his current teachers.

I am SO frustrated.  The poor guy is struggling with homework for literally four hours or more a night, almost every night.  When I try to help, it inevitably degenerates into screaming.  He loses pencils, books, assignment sheets.  We tried to set up a system of folders so that he would be able to keep track of the various papers he needs, and two weeks later he doesn't even know where the folders are.

Does anyone have any suggestions for pressure we can apply to the school administration to get more assistance from his teachers, or maybe a different learning environment?  We, his parents, are totally unsuited to homeschooling, and way too poor to be able to afford private school.  He does best in a very structured environment, so montessori and that kind of thing is right out.

God, he's been working on 5 math questions for three hours!  Help!
