Wait, haven't I heard this song before?

I have a strange relationship with cover songs. I like them, except for when I don't. I hate when bands release their very first single and it's a cover. I hate when bands are one hit wonders with a cover. But a good cover can be amazing. It can introduce you to a new song, or a new band. It can expose abilities the band's regular stuff doesn't showcase. It can make you sit up and say, "EEE! I like that band, too! We are clearly soulmates, alkaline trio!"

Requirements for covers to be included on this list:

1. I have to actually KNOW it's a cover the first time I hear this version. Sometimes, this is harder than you'd think, but I'm better at it than some *cough*thedave*cough*

2. The cover version should be less recognizable than the original to the average person who has a passing familiarity with music but does not work in a music store. Like, okay, "All Along The Watchtower" is technically a cover, but always and forever if you walk up to me and say "all along the watchtower" I'm going to come back with "Jimi Hendrix". I'm not going to come back with Bob Dylan, even though I do, in fact, know it's a cover. If I think about it. For that reason, I'm leaving out a whole boatload of 60s songs.

3. I'm leaving out alternate versions of the same song performed by the same artist. Even though, to me, the acoustic version of Everlong is a. better and b. so much better it's like a different song, it's not really a cover, so I'm leaving it off the list. (It's really good, though, and everyone should hear it.) For the same reason, I'm not including remixes, though that would be a fun mix to make.

3b. I'm leaving out covers by cover bands. Me First and the Gimme Gimmes are right out.

4ish. It's not a requirement, exactly, but there should be a reason to cover the song. Anyone can just re-do a song without changing anything but why? What's the point? Bring something to it. Put a spin on it. Change it up. Something.

So here, have a mix of cover songs. Hiding - July, 2008
