Grad School

Decision time. I finally decided. I'm going to Colorado State and working for Tom Rovis. He really is going to be the best advisor for me as far as I can tell. Despite not being at a top 5 school like Berkeley, I think I'm going to get better training as an organic chemist working in Rovis's lab. The Berkeley name only means something to someone who doesn't know much about organic chemistry. All that matters is the professor's name, not the school's. And what really matters to me is having an advisor who is going to be on my side rather than oppositional. Tom really wants me to work for him, so that's a good start right there. As long as I don't disappoint him, I'm pretty much going to have my choice of project and freedom to pursue my own ideas. And he is hands-on enough that I will learn a lot from him, rather than other professors that tend to just cut you loose and let you drown if you can't cut it.

Fort Collins is less happening than Berkeley, but it's still a fun little town. I can invest in a bike and pretty much never have to drive. Or maybe I'll just get a longboard and use the bike lane.
