AN- Hey guys! So I didn't think I'd be able to finish this by today, but I surprised myself. :P I can always add to this, but between this and the essay linked to in this, I think its all explored. Sort of. Like I said, I could go on and on psychoanalyzing the two, but that's not the point of this three part essay. The Destiel part hasn't even been started, so I don't think it'll come out till the end of next week, or maybe even after that. I'm going to be caught up with a lot of stuff.
Sterek
Before I even start on this, you should all read
this essay, which I stumbled upon while looking for some girl!Stiles fics for research (I’m writing one myself, because I have this thing for experimenting with gender roles and gender reversal).
Sterek, in itself, follows the entire “trope” of the bad boy and the innocent girl. Only thing is, Stiles is very much a guy, and isn’t really innocent. Its more of the fact that he’s the Sheriff’s son and Derek is an ex-convict, and has the whole misunderstood bad boy vibe that has every guy and girl going gaga.
Along with that, Stiles is a geek- in so many ways that it doesn’t matter that he’s in a sports team, which would, traditionally, mark him as a jock- and Derek is in so many ways the hulking football player- regardless of the fact that he is intelligent and doesn’t follow that stereotype, his personal inclination to grunt like a caveman makes him remarkably Moose-like (from Archie, for those who didn’t get it).
On top of that, for the first two seasons, they ended up in a very rom-com like scenario, which is thoroughly explained in the essay I linked up there.
It’s only natural our hearts turned to goo. I mean, who doesn’t love a good rom-com? Who doesn’t love the love-to-hate-you relationship that’s filled with enough UST to power a nation?
And I’m totally for it going canon, but like I said, there are some areas we should look at. The show has already proven to be slightly more open to the LGBTQ community with the single openly gay character-Danny (that gorgeous hunk of a boy. :P ).
So while I’m not particularly worried about it actually openly insulting the community, let’s all face it. Its probably not going to happen. The producers have already mentioned that they don’t see Stiles with someone romantically for a long time.
On one hand, YAY! It means that we can continue seeing Sterek and won’t have some random annoying woman getting in the way of the obvious soul-mates that the two are.
On the other, that says nothing about Derek. Yeah, his issues have issues, and personally, I don’t think he’ll be able to trust someone enough to let himself love them. I mean, admit it guys. He’s like the Dean Winchester of Teen Wolf. He refuses to admit his feelings, likes hiding his thoughts and reactions behind growls and threats (while Dean uses sarcasm), and seems to think that the entire universe hates him and if he lets himself love anyone, the universe will find a way to kill them.
I mean, we can speculate on all the possibilities, but I don’t think its going to go canon for a while, even if it actually does.
What I’m actually worried about is the entire second-rate thing. I’m not saying that they’ll definitely go off on an unnecessary plot line and stuff like that. This entire essay is just speculation. But think about it. The tendency of shows to lose their actual plot is higher when the main duo get together. If Derek and Stiles get together, we’ll probably end up with a sit-com scenario of manpain and heartbreak. Repeatedly. In a cycle that never ends because these boys don’t know how to use their stupid words. There’s a high possibility that it’ll go like this-
1. Derek pushes Stiles away for his own good.
2. Stiles isn’t good at taking orders, and pushes back at Derek with his blabber.
3. Derek snaps and does something really mean to get Stiles to leave.
4. Stiles gets all pissy and somehow (given his tendency to get into trouble) gets into a possibly fatal situation.
5. Derek comes to save him, goes Alpha, and they end up getting back together.
And Repeat.
And in that the possibility of Re-Peter, Scott being a lost puppy who’s adorably overprotective, the Scott-Allison drama, Lydia, and any other characters, you have a giant drama serial. The entire supernatural aspect of the show just fades to dust.
I mean, we can trust that the people from Teen Wolf will not do this. I totally do. They must know what they’re doing, right? But regardless, I’d rather not have that possibility, considering how equally competent script writers in so many shows have managed to do exactly that.
