Torchwood book club

I owe thornsilver five answers (and maaan, hard question:). She asked for 5 Books Ianto likes re-reading.

1)On his first day at Torchwood One Ianto found a copy of The Complete Worst-Case Survival Handbook and a sticky note that read "Welcome to the asylum!" on his desk. Now obviously this was meant as a joke --- he was about as far from being a field agent as one could get --- but it read it anyway because it never hurt to be prepared. He picked it up again after securing his post at Torchwood Three and decided to highlight everything that had actually happened to him since meeting Jack. It wasn't until he found himself highlighting the "How to wrestle an alligator" chapter that he paged through the book and realized he could count the number of remaining unmarked pages on one hand and wondered what had become of his life.

2)Wuthering Heights was Lisa's favorite book; she even wrote a thesis-length paper on it at University. Ianto thought it was melodramatic rubbish and just managed to slog though it once, and then only because Lisa kept quizzing him to make sure he didn't cheat. One of the few things he and Lisa had really argued about was his insistence that everything in it was ridiculous and no person would ever act like that.

The passage where Heathcliff digs up Catherine's body came vividly to mind every time he visited her in the Hub's basement.

He still has her copy, but that's the only chapter he ever reads.

3) Everyone laughed when they saw his annotated and bookmarked copy of The Zombie Survival Guide, but when those kids found that crashed space ship and released that virus, who was the one prepared to fight the shambling hordes? Ianto still feels rather smug about that one.

4) Jack has a habit of looming whenever Ianto...well, tries to do much of anything, but especially when he reads. He read most of World War Z with Jack reading over his shoulder, which wasn't a problem until Jack interrupted a particularly harrowing passage with, "Oh c'mon. She's completely exaggerating." When Ianto turned around Jack had an "Oh God, have I just screwed up time?" look on his face; it took most of the night but he finally got Jack to admit that some of the book wasn't exactly fiction. Or, to be more precise, any of it. And that Jack was actually in it. And that they fixed things because they "had a good doctor," and then Ianto didn't want any more details, just in case the Rift opened and swallowed them all as a side effect.

After numerous re-reads he's pretty sure he's figured out which one's Jack. Ianto just needs to trick him into admitting it.

5) His mother loved Pride and Prejudice; he's reminded of her every time he sees her battered first edition sitting on his bookshelf. He even re-reads it every year, just the way she did.

Just because he's given up believing in real-life happily-ever-afters doesn't mean doesn't still like to read one every once in a while.
