this fic is mainly inspired by hypothermal's fics which everybody should read (especially her sunhae fic and hyukjae/fei fics in her perfect timing universe).

nothing new, just a mess of words. and i apologize that this isn't the last part of the doona fic, you'll get that...next year. maybe.

adrift. pg-13.

adrift
maybe this was what dancing with the devil was like, she muses silently as she draws closer to him and pretends not to notice how his arms fell into perfect place around her.

a text from him was enough to make her throw all logic and rationale out of the window and whatever dignity she resolved to keep till the end of the night (back home where she was safe to cry) was left at the door the moment she faced him, her rogue warrior brandishing weapons in the form of flowers and a romantic dinner.

(all she had were trembling hands and a determination to brave through the very battle she never thought she had to fight again.)

he was dangerous, she knew that. sirens were ringing in her head all throughout dinner but they were softened by his quicksand grins and quiet chuckles, his laughter ultimately succeeding in silencing them. still, there were many things hidden behind those smiles and twinkling eyes, things that she should guard against (like the surge of forgotten memories and feelings, whenever his fingers strayed to hers).

she never did know how to keep out of trouble, a damsel in distress from her own prince.

soft music spills out into the living room and the soft radiance from the candles envelopes them in a warm orange hue as they dance to not only the familiar tune of the first song they ever danced to, but also to the rhythm of their slow synchronized heartbeats. his lips grazes across her cheek and her skin tingles, recalling the numerous goodbye kisses left innocently on her lips (and not so innocently on other parts of her body) so many years ago.

“you don’t look too happy.”

honesty is always the best policy (usually) and so, she settles on telling the truth.

“well… the last time you cooked me a nice dinner, with candles, steak and all, we ended up breaking up. you can’t expect me to walk in here, have a romantic dinner and then dance with you without having an ounce of nostalgic poetic sadness, you know.”

she tries to throw in a little womanly sarcasm at the end of her sentence and even though he laughs, he doesn’t take his searching eyes off her. it was the same gentle curious tint in his eyes that used to annoy her greatly; like he could see into the parts of her she didn’t know existed, a notion she had found very insulting.

he was doing this again and she avoids his gaze defiantly because she knows that her eyes are too damn expressive for her own good, a fact he knows full well too. (it was those eyes that made him fall so hard in love with her, he once told her.)

“they told me that you hid in your room and cried for three days after the break-up.” she gasps and pretends to be offended by his playful taunting but in the end, she cannot help laughing at the somewhat funny memory of red swollen eyes, throbbing headaches and an never-ending pain in the left of her chest.

(do people usually look back and laugh at the times when they were so silly, weeping and pining over a love lost and gone?)

“guess junhyung and yoseob didn’t tell you that I did the same too, just longer.”

it was probably something she should just laugh off because it was typical of him to say such things with an infuriating casualness. his words were always so light; they were never meant to weigh and tie her down to empty promises he knew he couldn’t keep.

(yet, she found herself hooked on his every word. she still does.)

but this is different, she senses it in the way he was looking at her with eyes that barely veil the miry of emotions within him. regret, sadness and the fierce determination of a man who have lost much and who didn’t want to repeat his mistakes; she sees all these in his eyes and is surprised by how much is reflected in her at this moment, like phantom ships floating adrift in the middle of their cursed sea, unseen in the day but whose presence are forcibly felt in the night.

this man has become a different person and though he was still the same boy she had begun to love all these years ago, he has grown in so many ways that the sudden awareness of how much both of them have changed leaves a bitter taste in her mouth.

ever since the break-up on a night so much like this, they have been dancing around each other, sometimes near enough to feel the other’s breath and touch but never together (cheek to cheek, hand in hand). it is now that she wonders if she was wrong all these years ago and that maybe things could still be salvaged if she had fought hard enough to keep them together.

his fingers rise to her face and gently brush away the tears she didn’t know were streaming down her cheeks, a telltale sign of her losing determination. she feels his breath resting on her skin as he called her name softly, a sort of hesitating hopefulness in his eyes that keeps him together.

(while she, on the other hand, has come undone, the threads unraveling themselves with every second spent with him till all her fears and desires are revealed in her tears and her trembling hands.)

“we were too young when we started and I was just a really stupid boy then who didn’t know how to keep us from growing apart, how to stop us from giving everything up so easily. but I know that now, I’m never going to let you go without a tough fight, even to my death, and that although we have change in so many different ways, my feelings for you have never changed. … so all I’m asking now is a chance to win your heart again.”

all she could do is kiss him and this she does, hoping that her valiant warrior will understand her answer embedded in her willing lips. he smiles into the kiss, hugging her securely and tenderly, true to his words.

(she’s just too proud to tell him that she never really gotten her heart back from him.)
