So I haven’t tackled my
quasi-patriotism in a while. I generally have a bad relationship with nationalism and patriotic endeavors. But this shall be a whimsical approach to my tentative relationship with the U.S. of A.
So without further ado, here are my top 5 reasons why America kinda rocks:
We have great people! Most of my friends are American, so I guess it can’t be all that bad. The good old U.S. of A. produces some really smart, sweet, funny, truly unique, and loveable folks. Of course we do have to take the good with the bad as we also produce some exceptionally terrible people as well. My friends are wicked awesome though J
We have delicious, cheap beer! There are so many American made beers it’s hard to list them all, but here are a few of my favorites: Harpoon, Saranac, Ommegang, Magic Hat, Smuttynose, and Sam Adams. Not to mention our delicious brew pubs: John Harvards, Gordon Biersch, and Salem Beer Works. Yes, one of the few things that America still makes well is beer!
We have wonderful neighbors-Canada & Mexico-better neighbors than we actually deserve, of course. I blame president chuckles for squandering our international relationships, but as it is quite difficult to pick up and move an entire country, they remain our neighbors despite some bad blood. This is of course goods news for us as we get to reap the benefits of super nice people, delicious foods (like poutine and burritos), swank beaches, wicked hockey, the list really goes on here…Basically they get a polluting, loud mouth, obnoxious neighbor and we get the good ones.
We have excellent national and state parks. I love huge tracks of land, so I am a big fan of our parks. We should take better care to protect them from environmental degradation and pollution than we do. I have decided to at least make an effort this summer to visit as many state parks as I can for kayaking. Massachusetts has an extensive state park system and I really have only experienced about a handful!
We have Hollywood! Although most movies suck butt, there are moments in which the movie industry gets it right such as Iron Man and the new Indiana Jones movie. Okay I haven’t seen either of these yet, but for the first time in a long time, I actually want to go to the movies. Robert Downey Jr. is an amazing actor and Iron Man actually looks like it is more than just flash. And of course, I grew up watching Indiana Jones so I am very excited about seeing the new one. It could be terrible, but I doubt it. Indiana Jones in the THE MAN! Movies make me feel like a little kid sometimes J
If I think of anymore, I will let you all know. It is my hope that I can come up with 13 (shout out to the original colonies) by July 4th. It going to be tough though to come up with 8 more I think. Feel free to make suggestions....
