"Finishing the book is a relief. I can't think of anyone who could know how I felt. Actually finishing it was the most remarkable feeling I've ever had... [I felt] euphoria, devastated, when I finished one chapter near the end I absolutely howled, it had been planned for so long ( Read more... )

Yes, A Nick in Time's brilliant, isn't it?

Ahhh, but she did answer some and she will. I have faith. Remember what Dumbledore said about Harry's greatest desire? How he could guarantee that no one else would ever have such unselfish motives (or words to that effect)? And remember in HB-P how Dumbledore said that he was thankful that they'd spared Harry the abuse they'd heaped on Dudley? JKR's going for the whole nature vs nurture deal. He's not selfish because his first lesson was that Dudley comes first and he didn't turn bad like Voldemort because he has inherent goodness.

And the abuse DID leave scars -- Harry's greatest desire is family which proves he suffers from loneliness and heartbreak. He broke down in 4th year when Mrs. Weasley hugged him. There's so many clues to emotional turmoil within Harry, you just have to read between the lines! Harry can't stand to be thought weak (OotP) -- he's always had to be independent and weakness is something to be scoffed at when living with the Dursleys.

He's got a 'saving people thing'. This indicates that the only way he feels worthy is by playing hero. He feels he has to do everything himself to live up to expectations.

He was so upset when Dumbledore ignored him in OotP because he'd transferred his paternal expectations onto him. And remember how Sirius wanted him to be James? You could tell that Harry sensed that and needed to live up to expectations: the saving people thing.

And when he found out that James was a bully he was devastated! Absolutely flawed. Most children wouldn't like this fact, but they'd understand and probably forgive, Harry didn't because his parents were supposed to be perfect... this almost hero-worship is a direct result of his upbringing, his parents were how he coped with the Dursley's mistreatment. This is shown by the Erised scene too.

It's at heart a story for children, she CAN'T spell out everything because she must keep her audience in mind. It's up to the older readers to, as I said, read b/w the lines.

She can't spell out Snape's inner conflict either because of the audience thing again. Also, the books are Harry-centric -- Harry's the protagonist! She can't change the PoV halfway through the series! Besides, I can't help thinking that we're MEANT to be kept in the dark about him and DH is supposed to reveal all. It's all planned, be patient, it's only 14 days and you'll get Snape's character revealed. When we find out why Dumbledore trusted him, we'll get to the reason why he joined the Death Eaters and everything else you want to know, I guarantee it!

Oh, and I think Fudge proves your thing about the Light Side... as well as the very fact that they have Snape in the Order; not everything's black and white in Canon, there's so many shades of grey. Was Dumbledore right to keep the prophesy to himself? Should Sirius have been in the Order when they KNEW he was unstable?

I'm telling you that everything will be or has been answered. Anyway, we've got 14 days to debate, I'm looking forward to your reply :)! Bring it on :p!

Yeah, all things I've considered but I don't think it's enough. It's all so shallow.

I would love to discuss it with you but I have a important exam on Tuesday and need to learn my stuff. :)

OMG! I've just realised how rude I've been! Or come across anyway. Your exam's today? Well, good luck! I wish you the very best!
And I really DO enjoy discussing Harry Potter; in any way. Debating is one of my favourite pastimes and debating about HP makes me so happy I get giddy! So thank you for disagreeing with me, basically :p! And the very best of luck for this important exam!

You haven't been rude it was all in good fun. We're all HP maniacs here and love discussing our subject ;)

(Btw - I passed but now I have to learn for my Spanish exams tomorrow. Bah.)

Congrats! Oh, and how'd you go in Spanish?
Thanks for understanding! I was re-reading my comments and I realised that if I'd been on the receiving end of my replys to you I might have been a bit offended! So I'm glad you know where I'm coming from :) *glomps*

Spanish went fairly well, it was a team effort whereas my part of the work was to copy the answers of my neighbor. ;) I like languages, you know, I just wish I could cut the part where I have to learn them.

I repeat: HP-maniacs. I live for discussions no matter whether they are soft or hard. If anything ever offends me (and it needs a lot to make me angry) I have no problems whatsoever to Avada Kedavra the offending party six ways from sundaylet them know. ^___^ We had a brief but wonderful dialog and I'm sure after book 7 we will continue it with a bunch of new ideas, questions and complains. *reglomps*

*G* I'm glad your test went well... I'm also glad your neighbor's test went well :).
I know exacly what you mean about languags: Deutsch is too similar to English and I was bad at spelling before... now I'm not even sure I can spell my own name!

LOL Welcome to my world. I need forever to write a comment because I'm never sure how to say something and if it is said right and whatever. I'm just waiting for that day where I want to say something totally harmless and the person at the receiving end's going berserk because I mortally offended them by writing utter sh*t.

You learned german in school? Or - like most I know - by hearing Rammstein? *lolz*

No, not in school -- German was my 1st language (Mum's German) but when I went to school I had to actually learn English so I forgot it all! Now I'm doing a correspondence course.
I'm pretty sure I've ALREADY insulted a few people in Deutsch, I just have to pretend that it's intentional and they go away :p!

And how far are you? Fancy a HP discussion in german?

Ich bin ja echt der Meinung, dass die ganze Spannung, die sich zwischen Snape und Harry aufgebaut hat irgendwann mal raus muss. Das kann doch nur Canon sein, dass die beiden im Bett landen. Oder wo auch immer.

Just testing. ;)

I'm doing a beginner's course.
Christ! Um this is without a dictionary so forgive my translation (I'll try to translate 1st and THEN I'll try to reply in a way that makes sense :p)

'I believe that the tension b/w Snape and Harry must soon come to a climax. It's only Canon that the two land in bed (?) or the nearest available surface(?)

Bingo! Hey, you're good. German is one of the hardest languages to learn so you can be far more proud of yourself if you do as if a german learns english.

So, you agree? Especially after the delicious Harry-dragging in the movie?

Oh yes, that was yummy. But when he dragged him down the stairs!!! It was so Phantom of the opera-like. 'Down once more to the dungeons of my black despair...' or sumthin' like that. Tehee.
