truepenny discovered today that our
local independent grocery store is going out of business. So. Guess my options are Pick 'N Save or Pick 'N Save. I suppose there's always Wal-Mart, but let's be real here--I'm not a Wal-Mart shopper. Particularly when it comes to groceries. Actually, you won't catch me in the Pick 'N Save either. And, even though no one asked me, I gotta tell ya, I don't need no Dollar Store.
In all honesty, I can't really get very irate about this. I'm disappointed, even a bit depressed. No, this won't do much to my grocery shopping; I mostly picked up odds and ends at the local market--peanut butter, cold cuts, the occasional gallon of organic skim milk. The bulk of my grocery buying has been and will continue to be done at my wonderful
local Co-Op.
But. And, so. I'm disappointed that profit has won out over people. I'm sad that being profitable, well-run, and community-focused isn't enough to keep a business open in small-town America. I'm appalled ("with two 'p's!") at the thought of Yet Another Chain StoreTM invading that same small town.
