The noises from outside are either New Year's fireworks, or the National Guard valiantly attempting to hold off a Canadian invasion force, probably mounted on moose.

First option is much more likely.

A friend called to wish us a good New Year, and paused the call when someone was setting off fireworks on their front sidewalk. Then she started lauighing, and said "The two guys that were setting off fireworks to impress their girlfriends...they just set one off in front of an unmarked police car, and the officers are getting out... that's Schadenfreude!."

Or, It might also have been the sound of Eric Gagne's arm falling off now that the Brewers gave him a bucket of money.

No chance. Now that the Brewers have given him a bucket of money, Selig will decide to suspend for the season any currently active player mentioned in the Mitchell report.
