And then one day Norway was not there any longer
“Hm. What do you guys even eat here?”
Iceland glanced carefully up along Denmark's sleeve but couldn't somehow meet his face. He knew he was thin and weak but he would be damned if he admitted to either. Norway would not return, not any longer, and who could ever stand up against Denmark? Sweden, perhaps, but Iceland did not feel inclined in the slightest to ally with him instead. Besides Sweden had Finland and many other areas under his control. He did not need a useless, small, rocky island in the middle of the ocean.
Suddenly he noticed the silence. It had not been a completely rhetorical question after all, Denmark wanted an answer, and Iceland cleared his throat a couple of times before he managed to find his voice.
“Mostly sheep and fish. Horses.”
He looked up a bit further and regretted it immediately. It was difficult to tell whether the look on Denmark's face had been concern, guilt or perhaps pity and it twisted into a heavy feeling in the pit of his stomach. Whichever feeling he had detected from him it was clear that Denmark meant well, and somehow that made everything worse.
“Well. Why don't we go find one of each and eat them.”
With that Denmark turned his back and walked away.
Maybe it was best to follow him He turned to leave End notes: at the end of Kalmar Union the ownership of Iceland moved from Norway to Denmark.
