From ancient times, people have had the need to pull down and ridicule those who think differently or act differently from the rest of the group. It's a survival instinct - this is what works to keep us safe, so why would you want to threaten that? Change is always scary. The unknown is threatening, and threats are to be eliminated through chasing them off, suppressing them or killing them.

It works, most of the time to keep the group safe, comfortable.

It can also cause stagnation.

Every bit of progress that has been made to make life better for mankind has happened because someone was strong enough to break away from the pack mentality and forge their own path. If they're lucky, they find like-minded people and forge a new community.

And if they're unlucky? It's a lonely existence, with little support and no acknowledgement that they were right, until after they're dead and gone.

History is full of the latter, and it's always hurt me to think of them shouting their truths to a world that told them they were wrong.

I also admire their strength of will, and hope that if I'm ever in that situation, I can defy society and stand for what is right.
