Yeah, there's a lot of problems with chauvinism in the martial (and I mean as in the kind of stuff that involves fighting of any kind, not just Asian) arts. It's been so effectively drilled into our heads that guys are the aggressors and the ones who are expected to fight that sometimes beginners react badly to a woman exhibiting the skill and mental toughness needed for any serious sportsman. Because if you haven't been exposed to them since an early age, physically strong women scare the shit out of you.
Or so I'm told.
I've faced problems with it in the past. Hell, I still face problems with it now. People call me crazy and maniacal because I like fighting people taller and heavier than me. If I was a boy they'd just call me determined.
But, well, if you're fighting against a male opponent who acknowledges your skill as a fencer/karate student, and fights you as an equal opponent and doesn't claim he was going easy if he loses--It's a good feeling.
