The trouble with the earpiece, as far as the good guys are concerned, is that it works both ways. Alice can listen to what Pete is saying, and what people are saying to him.

"Jillian. Hi, name's Pete. Look, you're in trouble, and I'm here to help. That chip that you have? The one that's changed your luck? Hey!"A woman answers, presumably Jillian

"Are you okay?"

Pete's there, gun drawn--the pistol, not the Tesla--and pointed at Gary's prone body.

Crap. Alice wasn't expecting him to get up here this quickly. Time to make things look normal, fast!

"Yeah," she says after a few moments. "Um, I'm fine." Pete looks at the man's body.

"I had to use the Tesla," she says seriously. This would probably be easier to sell if he wasn't still tied to the chair.

Pete crouches down to take a closer look at Gary Whitman. The man is staring up at the ceiling with a look of stunned confusion--unsurprising given that his short-term memory has just been zapped. Pete makes a show of pressing two fingers to Gary's neck, and gives him a look that says play along if you know what's good for you.

"He's dead," says Pete as he rises again. "You killed him."

(Gary, fortunately, has enough sense to keep absolutely still.)

Alice knows what the proper reaction should be, so she puts on a good facsimile of a horrified expression.
