Ian liked the color red. It was, in fact, his favorite shade of lipstick above all the others. When he rocked it, the contortionist looked hotter than any Hollywood starlet, using his thin frame to look like a classic pinup. Granted, he didn’t have the bust for the part, and had never gone as far as to stuff a bra under his outfits, but sometimes a lacking cup size allowed him to pull off ensembles that more buxom beauties couldn’t. After all, Ian Jerrick was a classy lady, not some floozy that made up for a lack of personality by showing an enormous amount of skin.

Sam hated lipstick, but wore it anyway during performances because it was the only thing that was vibrant enough to show up. It had taken a long time for her to get comfortable putting it on, and most of the time she just let Kimi handle it. The product tasted disgusting, and she hated having to worry about smudging it too badly. Still, despite her dislike, wearing it made her smile. It reminded her of when Ian introduced her to makeup when she was ten. He’d very carefully applied the bright red cosmetic, sat back, and announced, “Now you’re the prettiest girl that I know!”

He was the first person to ever compliment her like that, and her cheeks had burned red for what felt like forever.

---

Ian was seeing red; a tear-blurred, pissed-off kind of red. He’d caught Sam and Nate kissing under the New Year’s fireworks display, and it wasn’t like he had a claim or anything on her, but it still hurt.  And then she had the nerve to chase him down in one of the upstairs bedrooms. He was trying let her go, damn it, and her following him was only making it harder!

She wanted to talk to him, treating him like one of her girlfriends-he has to try to remember that, to her, he actually is-and suddenly he’s stuck listening to her talk about the stupid thing that he’d walked in on. It didn’t feel right, and Maybe I’m just not meant to be with someone. The explanations only seemed to make it worse and Ian couldn’t come up with anything to say to ease her worries. He realized that he just didn’t care anymore, so he kisses her in hopes of getting her to shut up and understand that he’s been in love with her for years.

Sam was confused when she woke up in Ian’s bed for the first time-she wasn’t used to waking up anywhere but in her own compartment-but then her brain started working properly and all the young ringmaster had to complain about was the fact that the naked contortionist next to her was hogging the pillows. It didn’t really matter, because she was warm and his chest was comfortable enough.

Reality had a rude way of ruining moments like those, though, and the blonde’s wandering eyes eventually landed on the clock. What she saw almost made her choke. Somehow, they’d managed to sleep in past noon, and while Ian’s doing so was not unheard of, Sam was lucky if she ever got to wake up after eight. If the other members hadn’t figured it out yet, they were probably wondering where in the hell she was.

Shifting around her boyfriend as best she could, Sam went about trying to find her clothing. Somehow, her bra had ended up on his desk and her underwear had become quite familiar with the dustbunnies under his bed. Ian stayed sleeping throughout the whole process, and she kissed him on the forehead before glancing at the mirror on her way out. Once again, the ringleader found herself almost choking.

All along her neck, Ian had left bright red, formless smudges of lipstick. Groaning, she went about wiping them away as best she could. Cadence lived in the compartment next to Ian’s, and she didn’t savor the idea of her adoptive brother seeing the marks. With harsh rubs, she attacked a particularly dark smudge, as though it was a spot that he had favored.  When her hands finally came away, Sam had to take a moment before exploding. Under the cosmetic, she found a rather dark looking hickey, the red slowly turning purple in a way that told her it would probably be around for a while. “Oh God damn it!”
