Food for thought...

I've come to the conclusion that in another life, I starved. At some point in time, I have gone hungry and/or starved to death. I've decided this because I've realized that food is my big splurge. I am fascinated with food. I love doing the grocery shopping, and left to my own devices I can easily spend a couple hundred dollars on food. A week. Seriously. (I can't afford to do this, but damn if I don't manage to spend more than my budget on groceries each paycheck anyway.)

I mean, I enjoy cooking, but I don't really cook anything exotic. Just the standard meals; a lot of spaghetti, hamburger, chicken stuff, etc. Home-cooking. But more than that I love getting the food and having it around. Just in case. The best things are the food with an indefinite shelf life; the things I can buy and keep almost forever just in case I decide I want to eat it. I seem to always have at least 5 boxes of pasta on hand (not counting mac-and-cheese deals, which I probably also have 5 boxes of at a time) a few jars of pasta sauce, 2 or 3 cans each of various types of soup and broth, and I think I probably have 7 cake mixes in my cabinet right now. (This in addition to the various baking things like chocolate chips and whatnot.) I haven't made a cake in months. But I have them, just in case. In case of what? I don't know.
I've also become quite the freezer-tetris master. I think there may actually be more food in my freezer than my fridge, and that's saying something because my fridge is insanely full for only 2 people, especially since one of them is only here half the time. And I love getting things that I can re-package into smaller portions and freeze for later. Again, just in case. I am particularly fond of doing this with chicken. I almost never use a whole package of chicken at once, so I divvy it up into Ziploc bags and label them with what it is and when I froze it. I usually do this as soon as I get home from the grocery store. I have at least 5 varieties of ice cream in my freezer, though I've not had more than a couple spoonfuls of any of them, and I have 3 or 4 kinds of ice cream toppings in addition to Hershey's syrup, which of course serves double-duty as ice cream topper and chocolate milk maker.

Ironically, though, I hate leftovers. HATE them. There are very few things I will eat reheated. I'm reluctant even to eat dip from an already open container, but I will do it. Thankfully, I have a husband who eats almost anything, and will happily eat most of my leftovers. Though with him around, there usually aren't many leftovers anyway.

And despite ALL THIS FRAKKING FOOD, I still feel like I never have anything to eat.

Some people splurge on shoes and clothes, I buy food. There are worse vices I suppose. (The problem is that even a really big fridge seems to never hold enough stuff!!)

Do you suppose I could get a job where I grocery shop for other people? Not cooking for them, mind you, just the shopping. They give me a list, their money, and some extra cash for me, and I go play at the store. I could do that. Quite happily.
