Sol Axel's Ice Cream
Originally uploaded by miriamjoyce. I was asked on a questionnaire recently for my "favorite keepsake." My first reaction was that it was a goofy question, but I was surprised to find that I had a fairly easy answer.
The set of four silver bells that you can see in this photo hanging on the bike cooler is the thing I chose to keep when my great-aunt Lil and great-uncle Sol moved out of their home and into an assisted living facility. Lil & Sol made homemade ice cream, chocolates, sugar Easter eggs, and taffy and ran a store on the Jersey boardwalk. The bells are, of course, much the worse for wear now, but they still sound great.
Lil and Sol have both died in the past few years and are missed.
