The reason Gay Pride Parades are important is because being gay is one of those things you can (conceivably) hide. And gay people get a lot of "I'm okay with gay people, as long as they don't talk about it or do anything gay in public and just generally act like straight people when they're not locked in their rooms with the blinds closed." So, you know, we're free to be gay as long as we... hide it. That's no freedom at all. We live in a heteronormative society. If you want a straight pride parade you just need to go outside on any day of the year.
Perhaps, I still don't like the depiction that gay pride gives of homosexuality, in that it's "different" to be gay, thus making it deviant. Those who have a problem with homosexuality, probably only have their stereotypes further re-enforced when they see a parade flaunting aspects of their prejudice.
Straight pride is more than needed in todays world.
No, I mean a day where the straightness is paraded down streets, so "gay pride" doesn't become a right only homosexual people have. No minority, benefits from special privileges in the long run.
Also, straight pride could just as fun if not more so, parading the stereotypes of the nuclear family and what not.
Does this mean we should have polyamory pride? pedopride (edgy I know)? furry pride? what not pride? The sanctity of it all is stupid. Most drag queens and kings (last time I knew) were heterosexual, yet the stereotype of gender bending / flirting remains in the homosexual arena. Graham Chapman hated Bowie because he thought he was posing as one. Why? How he dressed and presented himself. I am by no means against Gay Pride, but I have a lot of beef with how it is perceived. Mostly in a "only gay people can flag their sexuality with a parade (but only once per year)" way.
