"Fuck, I messed up didn’t I?"
"I don’t know what you’re talking about, Jae."
Jaejoong looked over at his cousin who took a sip of his soda. They were at their Senior Prom, the only high school prom that mattered and here he was sitting at his table with no date.
"You tried to help me and I didn’t listen. You said that I would regret it and I am. Please, can you help me make things right again? What should I do to get Shim Changmin to ask me to be his prom date again?" Jaejoong pleaded and his cousin, Junsu just sipped on his soda, happily ignoring him.
"I don’t remember what I said. I was too busy staring at Park Yoochun. Do you know how good he looked in that tuxedo?" Junsu said and waved a boy over.
Yoochun appeared out of a crowd of students that were standing on the dance floor and took a seat next to Junsu. Yoochun looked over and greeted Jaejoong who had a pout on his lips and a lingering look in a particular direction. He turned to Junsu,
"Yo, what’s up with your cousin?"
Junsu shrugged, “He didn’t follow my advice earlier and now he’s suffering the consequences.”
"Look at him," Jaejoong groaned in regret, "He’s so gorgeous in that black suit and that 5 o'clock shadow on his upper lip is so sexy. I just want to -"
"Hyung, the teacher might hear your perverse thoughts. Keep it Rated PG, okay?" Junsu scolded the older boy and then turned to his date,
"Let’s dance."
"Junsu, wait! Don’t go! What about my date?" Jaejoong whined when his cousin left towards the dance floor. He dropped his head onto the table and stared at Shim Changmin and his date, Song Victoria.
"It’s not fair … He asked me first … But … I turned him down … " Jaejoong frowned. He propped his head up with his left hand and continued to stare,
"I didn’t think he would get rid of those hideous circle glasses or that curly head of hair that he wears. Seeing him now with his hair straightened and no glasses, makes him look even more attractive. Ugh, I’m such an idiot."
"What are you doing, sitting around here and moping to yourself?"
Jaejoong glared up at the boy, “None of your business, Jung Yunho. Go back to your Queen.”
"She can wait. I want to dance with my princess first."
Jaejoong raised a brow at the boy, “Princess? Who?”
"You of course," Yunho smiled with his hand outstretched. Jaejoong looked at the hand,
"Sorry, but the last time I checked, I was a male."
Yunho chuckled, “Playing hard to get, huh?”
"I doubt he was playing hard to get," a voice said. Jaejoong looked over in surprise to see Shim Changmin standing there.
"Oh, it’s the nerd. You’ve tidied up a bit I see," Yunho pursed his lip and nodded in appraisal.
"I suggest you go back to your Queen. I see that she’s the unfaithful kind," Changmin said with a smile and Yunho scowled before leaving to find his date.
"Uh … thanks," Jaejoong mumbled, suddenly feeling shy.
"I wasn’t saving you. I just happened to be at the right place, at the right time," Changmin said.
"Oh …" Jaejoong was disappointed. He expected Changmin to come and save him and say something cheesy like he had him first or whatever and fight with Yunho over who should have him. But he should’ve known that anything seen in romantic movies never came out quite the same in real life.
"So, why are you here? I thought you had a date?" Jaejoong wondered. To have Changmin standing there and talking to him, was just too good to be true.
"A little noisy fish told me that you had something to say to me, so I’m here," Changmin said with a shrug.
Jaejoong stared at the boy in front of him. He looked even more stunning and handsome and sexy up close. He swallowed and stood up, wiping his sweaty palms on his dress pants,
"Um, noisy fish?"
"Kim Junsu," Changmin said with a thumb jabbing towards Junsu who was dancing with Yoochun nearby and stealing glances their way.
"Oh … right … Um …" Jaejoong chuckled nervously. He shouldn’t be so nervous and getting tongue-tied over a nerd. A really handsome nerd.
"So you had something to say?" Changmin smirked and all Jaejoong wanted to do right there and then was kiss those lips, feel that slight stubble on the boy’s upper lip, and run his fingers through those long, brown locks.
"Fuck," Jaejoong whispered. Changmin crinkled his brow,
"Pardon?"
"I made a mistake earlier," Jaejoong said, "It was just, you had those horrible glasses and -"
Junsu quickly cut in with a push at his cousin and a smile towards the tall, confused boy,
"Sorry, my cousin doesn’t have a filter and says everything in his head. What he meant is that he wants to have a dance with you."
"Oh …" Changmin looked for his date and spotted her with a couple of her friends, then smiled back at the nervous boy,
"Okay. I think we can have a dance."
"Really?" Jaejoong breathed. He was so happy that his heart felt like bursting. He looked to find Junsu sneaking away just as a new slow song came on. He gave a thumbs up and a silent thank you towards his cousin before wrapping his arms around the taller boy’s neck.
"I bet you were disappointed when I rejected you, huh?" Jaejoong whispered. Changmin tilted his head to the side as he thought,
"At first I was, but then I realized that it was probably because of the stereotype that was placed on me and that made the sting less painful."
"But what about Victoria? I didn’t think that she would -"
"Choose me? Yeah, I wasn’t her first choice but she couldn’t let her childhood friend go to the prom alone so she agreed to be my date for the evening," Changmin said. Jaejoong blinked in surprise by the information,
"Childhood friend? You mean, you two don’t like each other?"
"No, not in that way. We never saw each other as anything more than friends."
Jaejoong let out a sigh of relief and smiled, “So she doesn’t mind that you’re dancing with me and not with her?”
"No …" Changmin looked up to see Victoria looking at them and giving him a wink. He smiled,
"I think she’s quite happy that I’m dancing at prom with my long-time crush."
"Crush?!" Jaejoong sputtered, jerking himself away from the tall boy.
"Oh … Junsu didn’t tell you that?" Changmin frowned.
"I think he did, but I probably tuned him out that time," Jaejoong scratched his head nervously and cursed inwardly at how stupid he was to have missed that crucial information.
"But you want me now, so why the change?" Changmin wondered, pulling the older boy back against his body by the waist. He saw the blush on Jaejoong’s face,
"Oh, it’s because I’ve changed, isn’t it?"
Jaejoong nodded with a wince, afraid that he was being too shallow with his sudden change of mind, but Changmin only smiled,
"So, should I stay this way? Will that make you want me?"
Jaejoong nodded again, shyly this time when he realized that the other boy didn’t mind that he had changed his opinion on him based off of his new look,
“You look good as a handsome nerd.”
Jaejoong quickly covered his mouth in shame, but Changmin chuckled at the words,
"So, I’m a handsome nerd … Does that make you my pretty princess?"
Jaejoong frowned, “Don’t call me princess. I’m a guy.”
"I’m a guy as well, which means that I get to be the prince and you’ll be my princess," Changmin said. Jaejoong squirmed in his hold,
"I’m no one’s princess."
Changmin tightened his hold on the older boy and smiled,
"Yes, you’re my princess and no one is ever going to take you away from me."
Jaejoong grumbled under his breath at the word 'princess', but his cheeks still felt aflame by their closeness. He'll never forget this night for the rest of his life.
