I'm cool with it, but the department does not seem to be. They can't have alerted the university yet, otherwise the stuff would be gone already. In the long run, I seriously doubt he will be able to stay. Someone from facilities & operations is bound to notice eventually. His stuff is right next to a fuse box.

It's almost got to be someone working in the department. Everyone should ask for a raise.

Given the fact that the email was sent out only to math.umd.edu addresses, yes, it must be someone in the department-- or at least the guy who emailed us thinks so. I expect he knows exactly who it is and is trying to be tactful.

It's unlikely to be a professor since they have offices to sleep in if they so desire. It's definitely not any of the staff since they all have children (except for the IT director, who makes elephant dollars and has no need to save money by squatting). Thus it's got to be either a grad student or a postdoc. In either case, he won't be making very much.

As for a raise, we're lucky to have gotten the teensy raise that was promised to us last year. Maryland's state budget is in the crapper; most of the university employees will be taking about a week's furlough. There's no way we'll get another raise if the professors are essentially taking pay cuts.

Now that I think about it, even postdocs might be getting hit with furlough days (although not as many as higher-paid employees).

And you want to go into college level academics in this climate?
