30 Days of TV: Day Seven & Eight

May 11, 2010 17:18

Yes, I missed a day. I started my internship yesterday and was a bit distracted. It went well, if you're curious. Should be an interesting six weeks.

Day 07 - Least favorite episode of your favorite TV show

I'll go with Boo from the second season of Dark Angel.

I'd admit it, Dark Angel is a show that's more interesting in concept than actual execution. But I still love it and own in on DVD. Season one is the stronger season, as far as writing and production values but does not have Alec. Season two has Jensen Ackles as Alec. While season two has a more thought out story arc than just Max looking for her siblings, it is a story arc that I find sort of lame and wish they'd stuck to their design of Max surviving in post-apocalyptic Seattle with her mates over Max as savior of all from evil breeding cult. Yes you read that right, evil breeding cult.

Alec and to some extent Joshua make Season two bearable but the season definitely had some duds. Including Boo, which was a complete waste of an episode as it turns out to all be a dream. I hate that device. A lot.

Moving on...

Day 08 - A show everyone should watch

The first two seasons of the West Wing

I think they are the most solidly written twenty-odd length seasons of television I have seen. It's ensemble cast, which is my personal favorite, it's got great dialogue, interesting storylines, and great characters played by a stellar cast. If you haven't already, you should give it a try. The rest of the series is less consistent in quality but still mostly good. There are some great episodes in season three and four before Aaron Sorkin left but I still think the first two are the best as a whole. I've seen all seven but I usually reserve my rewatch for the first two seasons.

Episodes to recommend: Celestial Navigation from season one, Noel and Two Cathedrals from season two. They are great examples of a kind of storytelling that you don't see that often in mainstream television. You can watch these out order and still appreciate the story telling but to get the full impact (and emotional resonance) you'll need to start at the beginning
