Chapter Two:
Sharon

Spring semester turned out light for Laura. Most of the creative writing, English, and advanced history courses she wanted to take were offered in the middle of the day, giving her the afternoons off to do as she pleased and the mornings to sleep in. She spent a great deal of her free time writing the novella she planned to submit as part of her undergraduate creative writing requirements. The last few weeks she found it difficult to concentrate, though, and her writing had begun to slow down considerably and decline in quality.

Amanda, her young roommate, had been busier than usual with research papers and power point presentations due at midterm. Yet she was fun to have around. She was so delightfully submissive and there for her in the evenings when Laura wanted to fuck.

Laura had met her early on during fall orientation when Amanda was lost on campus. She was fresh out of high school and innocent and Laura had lost interest in her previous roommate, opening a spot for a new friend in her dorm room. She was so eager to please, so playful, yet at the same time she was an open book and a thin one at that. Her uses outside of the bedroom were limited, but at the same time she worshiped the ground Laura walked on.

The coming spring brought warmer weather that finally chased the chill away. Although it was still cool early in the mornings the afternoons were quite pleasant. On her off days Laura would go to a small clearing behind the dining hall and work on her writing. There were a few wrought iron tables and chairs there situated atop a hill that descended to the athletic complex. The shadows of ancient oaks protected her from the sun overhead, but she wasn't much for the bright light and often brought a hat or dark sunglasses. She'd write on her laptop or read a textbook in the fresh air.

From the overlook the forests that surrounded the school looked impressive. Sharp spires of pines interspersed with the skeletal deciduous trees that were beginning to turn green again in the rains of spring. Wandering clouds, their backs silver and their bellies blue, would come in from the ocean beyond and creep over the sky as they collided with the warmer air over land. As the clouds' shadows passed over the ground, the winds would pick up and Laura's dress would tickle her legs.

No one would come out to that place, it was Laura's alone. She was far enough from the cafeteria that no one wanted to carry their trays out when they could eat on the back steps, and she was far enough from any areas where students would socialize noisily between classes. The blistering paint on some of the chairs and tables was indicative of the fact that just about everyone but Laura had forgotten about this secluded overlook.

Or at least that's what she had led herself to believe.

On one breezy day Laura was walking to her favorite place when she noticed that someone was at her table. She slowly approached, her laptop under her arm, but then stopped...

Sharon was sitting at the table, her bike was propped up against one of the chairs. She was dressed in black shorts and a loose t-shirt. Laura couldn't help noticing how lovely Sharon looked. She had golden skin on her toned arms and legs. The breezes played with her ash blond hair as she took sips from a blue water bottle that was sweating on the table, its condensation dripping through the iron grating and onto the patches of green grass below.

Who was she? Laura thought as she took off her sunglasses so she could get a better look at Sharon. She had never noticed her around this part of campus before. Before Laura could say anything, Sharon finished her water and clipped the bottle into the cage of her bike. She hopped on and headed off towards the running track.

Laura watched her go, the wind whipping up the fallen leaves around her and tugging at her long yellow dress. A smile formed on her face as she slowly set off after her on foot, her sandals clapping against the concrete path.

The black rubber track ran in perimeter around a large soccer field that could also be converted for hockey or lacrosse. Today the soccer team was practicing passes and a handful of players in red and white jerseys ran around on the cool grass. A few joggers were making long laps around the track, occasionally having to dodge one of the errant balls that would go bouncing across the field before coming to a halt in the taller grass around the field.

Sharon left her bike by the fence, then headed to the track. She sat down on the grass and started to do a few stretches to warm up. The grass tickled her skin. It was a breezy day and the winds were somewhat unpleasantly cold, finding their way into her clothes.

Laura caught up with Sharon while she was finishing her v-sits. She walked up to the fence and watched Sharon from a distance. A smile formed on her face. She's so beautiful, she thought. But I don't know a thing about her.

She couldn't take her eyes off Sharon and watched her go through her warm up routine before taking off down the track.

The evening breeze came in through the open windows and played with the curtains. Laura lay in bed, entangled in the covers with Amanda whom she held close against her breast. They had just made love and their skin still glistened with sweat. The sky was darkening and slightly overcast. The oaks swayed outside in rhythm with Laura's slow breaths. She was mesmerized by the rustling leaves and the rocking boughs. It was cool in the room, yet she was consumed with the warmth coming from Amanda's body.

“Tell me,” Laura said, staring out into the distance. “How would you feel if I told you that I think I've fallen in love with someone?”

“Hmm?” Amanda looked up at her, pouting. She nuzzled against Laura's breasts. “You don't like me anymore?”

“Of course I do,” Laura replied, stroking her lustrous black hair, then kisses her on the forehead.

Amanda sighed, touching her fingers to Laura's lips. “That's all I want, then. Who is she?”

“Would you laugh if I told you that I don't even know her name?” Laura asked, leaning in to kiss her on the lips, their tongues entwining.

She was so full of energy, so delightful. Making love to her made Laura feel alive. This smiling girl who revolved her entire life around her. Amanda gasped as Laura slipped her fingers inside her and gently thrust her hips against her hand.

Yet she just belongs to me, Laura thought. She can't love me the way I would want to love her. She can't even comprehend the meaning of the word.

It was Amanda's sensual innocence that drew Laura to her. Yet the deeper she dug, the more disappointed she became that this girl was nothing more than a lively plaything.

Sharon, on the other hand, seemed different. There was something in the way she carried herself, the way she looked at the world, something in her eyes that made Laura want to know everything about her.

“I love you,” Amanda whimpered as she came and embraced Laura tightly, gasping her breaths.

I know you do, Laura thought.

This wasn't the first time she thought about bringing another girl into their bed. But the last few were just one night stands when they would have sex with someone who was nothing more than a stranger. Maybe a girl they picked up at a party, maybe someone who just happened to catch Laura's interest that day...

She closed her eyes, drifting off to sleep in Amanda's arms.

Laura's entire life had been spent in some type of boarding school far away from home.

She had been born in Crete while her mother, a French Aristocrat, and her father, an American Industrialist, were on vacation. Her father ran the European branch for a major chemical firm, a job that dragged him around the world, and eventually to Nice where he had met her mother. And so Laura spent the first few years of her life shuffled between her family in France and California.

When her mother died of a congenital heart condition when Laura was five, her father decided to enroll her at an American boarding school-preferring that she had an English education. She still would visit her family in Europe, but she quickly became familiar with the American way of life. Her home became the various boarding schools in Northeast, but she'd go to visit her grandparents on their vast vineyard in the South of France.

Her father became nothing more than a monthly allowance check and tuition payment. He was usually too busy to call more than once or twice a month. On the rare times he did call there was a huge time difference between their worlds so either one of them was either very busy or in had just crawled out of bed and too tired to talk very long.

College was just an extension of boarding school except that she had more freedom to do as she wanted and go where she pleased. She even took a year off between her Sophomore and Junior years to travel around Western Europe and write. She drifted between the small towns in France and Italy in a tiny rental car, trying her best to familiarize herself with a language which she had only spoken to her grandparents.

She had always had a passion for writing, and it seemed more and more that's where her life was beginning to take her with the short stories she managed to publish in literary magazines. Maybe she could get a job at a university, or maybe she should just return to France and write at the family villa-the rolling rocky hills, the sleepy villages with their narrow cobblestone streets of her childhood memories seemed oddly familiar and more than inspired her to write.

In reality she had no home or family, being thousands of miles away from her closest blood relatives. Her father was an only child and his parents had died years ago, giving her no close relatives in the States.

Family was the girl in her bed or her close friends she wouldn't mind having as lovers...

Laura's noble blood clearly showed in her features... Just about anyone she met found her alluring and from a young age she had learned how to seduce others.

Silver moonlight played ghastly shadows across the ceiling.

Laura woke up around midnight with Amanda holding her tightly. She was breathing quietly and sleeping so peacefully. Their room was cold, the open windows were now letting in the night air. She slipped out from Amanda's grasp and quietly pulled the covers from herself. Her body shone in the moonlight as she closed the windows and partially drew the curtains.

She took a blanket from the closet and wrapped it around herself then sat down at a chair by the window. Outside the silver clouds were moving past the moon, darkening the starry sky. The campus was completely desolate.

An empty world, she thought. That's much more fitting for me.

There was stirring behind her. “What's wrong?” Amanda whispered, trying to blink the sleep from her eyes. She was very groggy.

“Go back to sleep, dear,” Laura said.

“I can't sleep without you,” she replied.

You just need something to hold, Laura thought. It doesn't have to be me. She reluctantly stood up and climbed back into bed. Amanda wrapped her arms around her, giggling softly as she fondled her breasts from behind.

What is she doing right now? Laura thought. Is she asleep? Is she in bed with a lover? Is she thinking about someone she yearns for? Is she touching herself?

Laura had wondered why she hadn't just approached Sharon.

It was clear that she wanted her, the urge becoming stronger with each passing moment. Yet it would feel so much sweeter if Sharon would throw herself into her arms, becoming hers and hers alone-free to do with as she pleased, free to dive into her soul and bare the pain of loneliness that had been haunting her throughout her entire life.

“Laura, let's play again,” Amanda whispered, biting Laura's earlobe.
