The tournament begins.

Note: I always wanted to write something similar to "Battle Royale" or "Hunger Games"

I am hereby pleased to inform you that you are selected by the town’s council to attend the annual “Erebus Camp”, or known as the camp of darkness. The 20 selected candidates will have to fight using their wits and battle strategies in order to win the battle; for the winner will be the only one to survive the camp.

The match will start on the 1st of January once the town’s tower clock strikes at 6pm during sun set. If one evokes the council’s decision and choose to be absent on the day of tournament, one will face a live-long imprisonment or death sentence.

Good Luck, Candidate.

Gripping on to the edges of the paper even more tightly, he eventually ripped it apart and threw them on the carpeted floor.

“What is it, Taemin?” The boy collapsed on the sofa and buried his head into his folded arms upon hearing his father’s voice.

“Dad…”Taemin mumbled and lifted his head up to look at his father, “I’m one of the 20, Dad.”

At that moment, he lost his strength to approach and console his son. Mr. Lee didn’t know what he should do to save his Taemin.

No, it’s not a camp. It’s a death sentence.

…. …. ….

5 miles away from the city, a tall and lean jogged across the old concrete pathway towards the red letter stand. He hardly received any letters under his name ever since he bought a computer with the pay he earned with his summer job. But today was different. He read the cursive words written in ink on the envelope.

Choi Minho

He tore it open excitedly but began to scan through the lines with impatience-Cursive handwriting seemed terribly unappealing to him. It was then when Minho spotted the two words that explained the entire purpose of the letter.

Erebus Camp

Closing his eyes for a second or two, Minho folded the letter and tucked it back into the envelope neatly. Placing it back into the letter box, he took the rest of the letters with him and walked towards the dark path leading towards the rainforest just across the field.

“I didn’t see anything just now.” Was the only form of consolation he could ever think of.

… … …

“NO, Jinki.” The pale looking boy dropped the letter on the table, “I’m Onew, not you.”

“But Hyung…” He took a glance of the letter in hatred and slammed his hand on the table top. “Damn it. DAMN IT.”

“I’m going, jinki.”

“Keep quiet Hyung.” Jinki hissed in frustration at his older brother whom stared at him dumbfounded, “You’re sick, Hyung. I would not let you take the risk.”

Jin Ki stood up from his seat and walked towards the calendar pasted on the wall. Running his index finger down the dates, he reminded himself that he only had a week left.

Only a week.

“From now on, I’m Onew.”

… …. ..

Key pounded his fist against the wooden door and began to nibble his fingernails anxiously. He did not even want to look at the piece of paper that was crumpled in his hand. Key never stopped thinking of ways to get rid of the burden although he knew that they would never work.

He thought that sending back the letter would be a fool proof plan, but how he forget the cautiousness of the implemented town policies?

Pounding on the door for the second time, the door finally swung open hastily and he made eye contact with a pair of helpless and frustrated looking eyes.

“Jinki….” Key lifted his hand up and revealed the piece of paper in his hand, “The Erebus Camp.”

It was then when he spotted the forceful smile that slivered across Jinki’s face.

“Key, he’s trying to take over my position and attend on my behalf.”

“Lee Jinki are you crazy?!”

“Key… would you do the same if you were me?” He was rendered speechless, especially when he saw the tears that rolled down Jinki’s face. He was probably trying to hide it from his older brother the entire time.

Who doesn’t fear death?

… … …

The young man stood in front of the mirror and stared at his upper torso blankly. He was ashamed of what he was and the scars reminded him constantly about it. Behind the biceps and well-toned skin, the scars were too visible that it seemed impossible to hide his ugly deeds.

“Are you ready, son?” Jong Hyun’s turned around and looked at the middle aged man he could no longer respect.

“You disgust me… father.”

“It’s an annual event I have to hold as the minister. It’s a town tradition.” The town minister sniffed and watched as his son put on his singlet, “It’s not for you to decided, Jong Hyun.”

Jong Hyun glared at his father and mumbled coldly,

“Get the fuck out of my room.”

He lost count of the number of times that he attended the Erebus Camp-for once, Jong Hyun no longer want to win the tournament. All he wanted to do was to repay for the lives he had taken away, even if it means that he had to sacrifice his.

A/N: If you guys noticed it, I’m doing something similar to Hunger Games/ Battle Royale. I always wanted to write something like this for a long time and I finally found a chance to do so (YAY). I will try to finish the whole series by the end of April because that’s when my school term starts. TT^TT Hate the new term )):
