KyuHyun POV
“Umma doesn’t like watching horror movies.” That’s what Taemin said, and I kept that in mind. Is Sungmin too afraid of ghosts; is that the reason why she dislikes them?
It must be.
Sitting in the theatre together, we chose the front seat closer to the aisle so we could leave before anyone else can spot us. I thought everything I planned would be successful-where she would scream and lean closer to me during the scary scenes in the movie.
I waited for that moment for so long, minutes left and soon after, an hour. Sungmin continued staring at the big screen coolly even when the plot became more and more intense.
But I don’t know how she could stay so nonchalant throughout the entire horror movie; I wondered if she was really watching it or not. Munching on the popcorn, she sniggered when she saw me flinching and choking over the coke when the “normal Asian ghost” appeared on the big screen-the one with the long black hair and white dress.
Well, it’s not really my problem at least, because everyone else was screaming or shuddering, except for Sungmin. How could she stay so indifferent?
As it became more and more horrifying, I wondered if Taemin was playing a joke on me.
At the end of the movie, I felt as if I had just sat on a roller-coaster-there was blood and body parts splattering throughout the whole show and that ghost looked disgusting.
“I thought you didn’t like watching horror movies?” I asked Sungmin and she shrugged her shoulders and folded her arms.
“I think you are more horrifying.”
Rolling my eyes, I put on my sunglasses as everyone started to leave the theatre. Getting up from my seat, I walked out of the theatre; Sungmin following suit when I was a few meters away. I think it would be even more terrifying if they spotted us in the theatre and chase us down the next 3 streets.
… … … …
“Appa! Appa!” I could hear Taemin’s voice as he pulled the pillow away from me. I groaned and opened my eyes a little, patting the back of his head. Taemin lay beside me on the bed and started playing with my untidy hair.
“Umma says your breakfast is ready.” I nodded my head and swept the hair off my face, as he reached out his little hand for mine and pulled me out of the room. Scanning through the food on the white dining table, the dishes seemed rather different today.
“Let’s eat.” Sungmin said bluntly, as she sat down in front of the table and picked up her chopsticks. Looking at my dish, I picked up the spoon and ate a spoonful of the kimchi fried rice.
Chewing on the grains slowly, my taste buds went numb as I began tearing up.
“OH MY GOD!” I yelped and gulped the water down, Sungmin continued eating and observing me across the table as if she was watching a show.
“What did you add inside?”
“Chilli Paste into marinated Kimchi and Fish.” I moaned and ran to the washroom.
“I’m going to die!”
“I thought you said you want me to cook for you?”
“You added too much chilli!”
Wooing Sungmin is like playing chess; you must have strategies or back up plans. Just one wrong move and you could have gotten yourself killed.
Fetching Taemin to school, I sat on the same bench as Min Jung, Taemin and Dong Hae were chatting. I could see how unhappy Taemin was when Dong Hae tried to ‘bribe’ Min Jung with his origami flowers again, because I was rather pissed too.
It was then when the same lady approached me, her face redder than the previous time I had seen her. I would not be surprised if she suffered from a heatstroke and faint on the spot.
“Mr. Cho,” I stood up and listened to her attentively. I looked at her, as she tilted her head and caught a glance of Taemin.
“As an Uncle, you should spend more time with Taemin.”
“What’s wrong with him again?”
“I think he needs more attention from the adults in his family.” Indicating for me to follow her into the room, I entered the playroom as the children sat on the floor across the room. Sitting on a chair beside her, I noticed Taemin, sitting in front of the piano with both of his hands on the white keys of the instrument.
Before I could ask the teacher for the reason for me to be here, a melodic tune was played-so smoothly, without any pauses or mistakes. Staring at Taemin feeling awed, I watched as his fingers pressed the keys so quickly and professionally.
When he pressed the last key, everyone applauded for him, as I smiled at him proudly. I didn’t know it would feel that good-to hear your child playing his first piano piece in front of you.
Sungmin POV
Kissing Taemin on his cheeks as he finally fell asleep; I could KyuHyun tugging my hand from the back. Holding me by my wrist, KyuHyun pulled me out of the room and closed the door behind me.
“What are you doing?”
“Let’s eat supper.” Pointing towards the white dining table, I saw two pieces of chocolate cake and two glasses of wine in front of me.
Sitting opposite KyuHyun, he pushed a piece of cake to me and passed me a fork.
“Dig in.”
“I don’t eat sugary food at night.”
“Stop being a spoilsport.” Grunting at him, I sank the teeth of the fork into the cake, until the tip of it touched a hard, circular thing at the bottom. Looking up at KyuHyun curiously, he smiled at me with embarrassment and took a sip of the wine.
“That was fast.” Pulling the object out of the cake, I picked it up between my fingers; my heart skipped a beat when I realized what that was.
It was a ring.
Is KyuHyun proposing to me?
I want to accept it; I may say yes, but a part of me left me in dilemma. I am afraid that we would not be happy that way. But I’m afraid that if I were to turn him down, I may regret in future. Cleaning the ring with the tissue, I heard him asking me the question I was so afraid to hear.
“Yes, or no?”
Biting my lips, I pushed it towards KyuHyun and asked him,
“Do you take ‘I don’t know’ as an answer?” KyuHyun pushed the ring back to me, and asked me, pleadingly,
“Why?” Picking up the ring again, I dropped it into his wine. The diamond ring sank to the bottom of the glass into the liquid.
“I need more time.”
I came here mainly for Taemin. I didn’t expect myself to fall into such a messy situation, where the both of us started having feelings for each other. Getting up from my seat, I looked at KyuHyun once more apologetically before walking back into the bedroom.
“I’m going to Jeju Island for filming tomorrow.” He finally said.
“As if you are going to Africa.” I tried to act nonchalant again, in order to hide the emptiness in my voice. Did KyuHyun spot it; how heavy my footsteps were?
“Enjoy yourself.” That was the last night I said to him.
When I woke up the next morning, the emptiness did not subside; instead, it got even worse. When I realized that he had already left, it was then when I felt it-how much I miss him.
