CHAPTER SEVENTEEN: Blood Tides

There were no words at that moment for Hankyung.

The young man with the raven hair stared up at him with a look of mild acceptance. Yesung seemed completely unmoved by the admission that Minwoo had made. Both men stared at each other. Yunho took a moment to undo Hankyung's bound wrists. Hankyung slowly lifted up his hand. The digits trembled as he clenched each one slowly into a fist. Yesung's dark eyes registered the move of each knuckle, the very subtle shift of each joint. There was even the faintest sound of popping as a hard fist was formed. Yesung closed his eyes slowly. It took only a moment for the force of the first blow to register in his mind.

Hankyung struck with a vicious punch, fist impacting the side of Yesung's face. The bound young man's head flew to the left. His lip splintered open and blood dribbled from the corner of his mouth. He didn't turn his head but opened his eyes barely. He tried to get his focus before another hit from the opposite direction spun his head. More blood spilled into his mouth and he could taste the iron coating his tongue.

So much fury.

Hankyung felt as though his very body had been ignited on fire. He wanted to punish Yesung. To make him pay for everything he had taken away from him. To make him hurt for all the years he was without Siwon. The next punch was even harder, skin turning painfully purple as Hankyung drew back his fist yet again.

Donghae watched in horror as his lover drew his hand back again. He knew all too well that the next blow could be the final one for this stranger. He forced his tongue forward, wetting the binding in his mouth the best he could. The gag loosened and he shook his head back and forth. Minwoo was too busy paying attention to the action to notice the strip falling free from the youth's face. Donghae drew in his air just as Hankyung was ready to throw the potentially final punch. But before he could even say anything, he watched as Eeteuk suddenly flung himself sideways in his chair. He landed himself in front of Yesung. The Chinese man's fist violently came forward and impacted Eeteuk's chest. The older man gasped in his air and choked.

"HANNIE!!" Donghae cried. "PLEASE DON'T!!"

Hearing Donghae's voice pulled Hankyung from his near delerium. He looked down at his blood soaked fist and then back to the two men bound to the chairs. Yesung was staring down at Eeteuk, trying his best to comfort the gasping man. His face was severely bruised and his eye was starting to swell shut. Eeteuk looked up at Hankyung, his words ragged as he tried to draw in his air.

"Please, please, don't." Eeteuk whispered. "You've already taken Donghae from me. Please don't take Jongwoon from me too."

Hankyung swallowed back the bile that was rising up in his throat. He took a couple steps back, staring at the blood on his fingers.

Siwon wouldn't have wanted this. He wouldn't have wanted Hankyung to lower himself to this level. Donghae had told Hankyung once that there was too much revenge. He couldn't do this, not any more. He raised his eyes to see that Eeteuk was uprighting himself, struggling to get out of his bindings. Yesung was on the verge of being unconcious.

"What's the matter, Dancer? Lost your nerve?" Minwoo hissed.

Hankyung flexed his fists slowly. He turned his attention to the older man. Minwoo was standing next to Donghae, sliding his fingers through the young man's hair.

"Don't. Touch. Him." Hankyung growled.

Hankyung approached Minwoo. The man looked at his white haired counterpart and then flipped out something shimmering. The dim light of the warehouse glinted off a small blade. Hankyung stopped in his tracks as the tip was pressed dangerously against the side of Donghae's throat.

"Now, now. You wouldn't want to see your little fish gutted, now would you?"

Donghae's eyes went wide. He could feel the pressure and barest prick of the blade. He struggled against his bindings. Minwoo's eyes narrowed and he purposely knicked Donghae's skin. A bare trickle of red surfaced. Hankyung's nostrils flared and his eyes lit up like flames.

"Now here's the deal, Dancer. You took something of mine over three years ago. I want repayment for it. So, if you'd like to see your Donghae live to see tomorrow, you've got two options. The first is that you go ahead and finish killing off Yesung. He's been a thorn in my side since he ruined not one, but two hits."

Hankyung's eyes went wide at that moment. He quickly thought back to the fight over a week ago. The bullet that had been meant for him, but had ended up inside Jin's stomach.

"That's right, Hangeng. That bullet was from Yesung. He's been trying to make up for the little mishap when he took out your Charmer. Trust me, it wouldn't be a waste if you took care of him. No one would miss him."

The taller man's eyes fell upon Yesung. The man was nodding in and out of conciousness. Eeteuk was pressed to his side, doing his best to try and keep Yesung with him. The expression on Eeteuk's face touched something deep inside Hankyung. He remembered all too well that look of desperation as Siwon lay dying in his arms. He wouldn't let someone else suffer that same fate.

"No." Hankyung responded sharply.

"Well, that leaves you with the second option."

"Which is?"

"We have a little fighting match of our own. A 'To the Death' Match. If you win, you take Donghae and leave."

"Not without Eeteuk and Yesung."

"Fine." Minwoo said blandly. "However, if I win, you'll give me your life. An eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth."

Donghae shook his head, not caring that the blade was scraping over his skin.

"No, Hankyung! Please, don't!" Donghae begged. "I don't want anyone else to get hurt!"

"He doesn't have a choice in this, Donghae. Besides, I know that Yunho has been more than itching to get you into a private ring. This should take you back to the old school fights, Hangeng. Just an old warehouse, some dirt and a few people who like to take bets."

Hankyung's eyebrows knit together. He looked over at Yunho. The man was wrapping tape around his hands. He smirked darkly as he glanced upwards. A bare glimmer of teeth peeked out from his sneer.

"Consider it a good way to go, Hangeng." Yunho said calmly. "I've never gotten a chance to actually take you on. It'll be good to get you out of the way."

"What have I done to wrong you, Yunho?" Hankyung questioned.

"Nothing. I just don't like compeition for number one is all. Plus, money talks. Changmin happens to be speaking my favorite language with it."

Changmin just laughed cooly and leaned against a nearby post.

"What can I say? I know how to negotiate."

"Then just tell me one thing, Minwoo." Hankyung said quietly. "What happened that has made you hate me so much that you would try and take everything from me?"

Minwoo's expression changed. Donghae felt the pressure of the blade lift from his neck. The older man stepped away and approached the Chinese man. His eyes were sparking dangerously. The blade spun a couple times between his long fingers before coming to rest just a mere breath away from Hankyung's face.

"You're not the only one who lost everything that was important to them. Think back, Hangeng. Think back to over three years ago. The Charmer and you were participating in a fight. There was a supposed accident and a fighter was struck in the back by a certain Dancer's foot. He was paralyzed from the neck down and a week later they had to pull the plug on him. Does that sound familiar to you?"

Hankyung felt his mouth go dry. The fight played back vividly in his mind. The dodge, the impact, the sound of the other's spine cracking under his foot. Yet he knew the truth already.

"The doctors said he had already had a preexisting spinal injury. Anything could have triggered the paralysis."

"That might have been true, Dancer. But it was your foot that inevitably killed him. You think you were the only prize from China? Do you know how much time, how much money, how much everything I had invested in Zhoumi?"

"So this isn't about getting revenge for Zhoumi, is it? It's about getting revenge for the 'investement' you lost."

"You're damn right."

Minwoo suddenly slashed foward and before Hankyung could dodge, the blade sliced through his tanktop and then split some of his skin by his collar bone. He staggered back and looked down. The wound was far from deep, but little droplets began to paint red down his skin.

"HANNIE!" Donghae cried.

He began to struggle against his bindings. He rocked back and forth on his chair. The legs quivered and the piece of furniture fell over. The impact knocked the wind briefly out of Donghae. He laid there silently, his eyes having fallen shut. He could hear the soft, vicious laughter of Minwoo.

"Well, it seems that your lover has already knocked himself out. He won't be able to see the upcoming event. I know he's such a big fan."

Donghae kept his eyes closed. His hands fiddled behind his back. He could feel something sharp. His fingers moved back and forth over the smooth object. Donghae ascertained it was a small piece of broken glass. He began to shift it back and forth. The ends slipped over his fingers and poked him occassionally. He finally got the shard turned in his fingers and began to work silently on the duct tape holding his hands together. He had to get out, had to help Hankyung somehow.

"Well now, shall we draw a circle and get this fight started?" Minwoo questioned.

The wind and rain howled as Junsu's private car pulled up to the docks. The engine came to a quiet hum and then stopped all together. The five men sitting in the car stared at the old building.

"So this is where they took everyone, huh?" Kangin questioned.

Jaejoong nodded as he pulled the keys from the ignition. His face was unreadable. He continued to drum his fingers back and forth over the handgun.

"So what the hell are we just sitting in here for?" Yoochun hissed.

"This is Minwoo." Jaejoong stated. "Most likely he's already expecting us. It's how he works."

"You still haven't told us what you have to do with any of this." Kangin said once again. "We're about to step into a potential trap. I think we have the right to finally know."

Jaejoong was silent. He took a few deep breaths and then looked at everyone in the car.

"My name is Kim Jaejoong. I'm an ex-undercover officer who worked for a private sector of the South Korean Interpol Police. Over five years ago I was asked to infiltrate the world of underground fighting. I had a partner who worked with the Chinese subsector. I managed to get a training position with a certain Xiah Junsu. My partner went to work for Minwoo as a fighter. We were able to monitor both activities while we were operating in seperate areas. However, over three years ago, a fight occurred with unexpected results."

Kangin felt his blood run cold. He shook his head and then looked back at Jaejoong.

"No, it can't be."

Jaejoong nodded sullenly.

"My partner had a long known spinal injury that he had received in the line of duty. Up until meeting a certain Dancer and Charmer, the injury had never been an issue. But your Dancer was very skilled and an impact from his foot ended up paralyzing my partner from the neck down. A week later, we had to pull the plug on him."

"So your partner was that fighter. I think his name was Zhoumi?" Kangin asked.

Jaejoong sighed softly.

"I was pulled from the case immediately. Instead of fleeing though, I kept my identity a secret and continued to work with Junsu. I didn't care that I had lost my job. I was going to get revenge on the man who put Zhoumi into that position. I was paired up with Yunho when he arrived. He seemed a good man to use, Yunho had connections. I had my suspicions about Changmin from the beginning, call it a detective's hunch."

Yoochun shook his head.

"All this time, Jaejoong. I thought we were friends."

"We are, Yoochun. That's why I never turned anyone over. This is personal for me. I didn't want any of you involved, but after what happened to Golf, Mike and Yamapi, I know that's not possible. And Kangin, you want an end to this too."

The trainer couldn't argue the point. He gave a slight nod with his head.

"How do we know that you're not going to turn us over to the police when this is all done? How do we know this isn't all a front too?"

"We don't." Sungmin suddenly spoke up from behind.

"But for some reason, I trust him." KyuHyun said very softly. "We're here to get our friends, Boss. Let's do this and put an end to this cycle of revenge."

Kangin once again felt a glowing pride in his duo. He reached into his pants pocket and drew out a roll of white binding tape. He pulled off two long strips and wrapped up his hands slowly. He hadn't felt the delicate fabric of the tape on his skin for what seemed like years. He then offered the roll to KyuHyun. The youth tore off two long strips and began to apply them to his hands. Slowly, the roll of tape made it around each member, Sungmin, Yoochun and Jaejoong all following the same process. The five men flexed their bound hands slowly. Kangin held up his right fist to the center of the car.

"For those we've lost and for those we're going to save. Fighting."

The other four put their fists together with Kangin's.

"Fighting."
