Chapter 03
The next morning Eeteuk woke up not to Kangin face as always, but to Ryeowook’s sleeping face. He was rather surprised that the kids snuggled in to their bed last night without him knowing. Ahh I must be too happy last night. He had the soundest sleep and best dream last night. Eeteuk took his time to observe the two kids. They were really good looking he thought. Sungmin was cute; he had chubby cheeks and big eyes which sparkle. Ryeowook had more exquisite features, sharp and beautiful his high cheekbones add to his charm. They were very different. Eeteuk thought Sungmin was just like the sun, shining brightly, bringing hopes and life. While Ryeowook was like the moon, gentle and warm, bringing comfort to people. And there was Kangin, his universe. He was glad that all this wasn’t a dream. He covers the blanket carefully over the two of them before leaving the room.
Ryeowook stood shyly at the kitchen door, “Erm… I can’t reach the toothbrush.”
Eeteuk smiled at the little boy, at least he started talking to them. This was a good sign. He led Ryeowook back to the bathroom handed him his sapphire blue toothbrush and left hurriedly looking for something. He returned with a small stool and placed it at the corner of the bathroom. “Next time you can use this. But do be careful” He tapped Ryeowook gently on the head, “Oh do wake Sungmin and Kangin later. Breakfast is almost already.”
After breakfast, the four of them started repainting the room. They felt that the attic was too gloomy for the kids. Sungmin insisted on pink, and although Ryeowook did not mention a word. But it was obvious from the reluctance in his eyes and his glum expression, he was not looking forward living in candy floss land. Kangin looked like he was going to cough out blood if the room was all pink. They finally settled on pink and green.
It was only this afternoon when Sungmin and Ryeowook was outside building sandcastle. Kangin sat on the corridor outside keeping a close watch on them. Eeteuk went to unpack their bag, consisting of some books, a pack of biscuit, a pink fluffy bunny and an envelope with their birth certificates in it. There was also a note in there.
“Please take good care of Sungmin and Ryeowook. Sungmin is very eloquent for his age with a sharp tongue. He has a very cheery personality and an odd fascination with pumpkin pies and pink. He tends to whine and well beg for things, putting his big eyes to good use. Please don’t be too harsh with him. He is not a spoiled brat. Just let him be and he be alright after awhile. Ryeowook is a quiet boy. He has a sensitive nature and takes a longer time to open up. The two of them may seem very difference but they are the same after all. They are very innocent and kind hearted. I can still remember when the older boys were throwing stones at birds, both of them gotten into a fight with them. Even when they knew there wasn’t chance of winning. Sungmin and Ryeowook aren’t real brothers but Sungmin takes Ryeowook as his tongsaeng because of their age. It seems like Sungmin is taking care of Ryeowook but actually Sungmin is very dependable on Ryeowook. An extra note Ryeowook have an allergy with peanuts. I sincerely thank you from the bottom of my hearts for taking care of them. No words can express my gratitude toward you. Kamashamnida…”
“Teukie, when did Heechul said he be back?” Kangin voice ranged from the hallway.
Eeteuk putted everything in place and walked over to Kangin with the letters in his hand.
“Two weeks later. Read this.” Eeteuk handed Kangin the letter.
“Join us!” Sungmin waved dramatically.
Ryeowook was already half buried under the sand.
“Sungmin should we make some pumpkin pies tomorrow?”
Sungmin’s face lilted up instantly. “I love pumpkin pies!”
“What about you Ryeowook? What do you like?”
Ryeowook smiled shyly and in a soft voice “I like the hot chocolate you made us that night.”
“We can have it tonight. If you want.”
Ryeowook nodded his head shyly, a little blush was starting to show on his cheek. Eeteuk was pretty sure that if he wasn't being sand buried by Sungmin, Ryeowook would have gone to hide now.
“It’s not fair.” Kangin complained to Eeteuk in the kitchen. The kids were being sent upstairs by Eeteuk to clean their rooms.
“What is it this time my dear?” Eeteuk said uninterested. It only barely two week when since the kids came to live with them, Kangin had complained about the lack of attention Eeteuk is giving him. Fancy him being jealous of the kids.
“Ryeowook”
Eeteuk looked up, amused by his answer, “What about Ryeowook?”
“We all know he is a shy kid. But he would talk to you, ask you to read story to him, play with you. And he wouldn’t do that to me. Every conversation I had with him is like a Q&A session. Have you been bribing him, Hyung.”
Eeteuk laughed in exasperation, “You just need to be more patience with him. Well. Smile more.”
Kangin seems to be struggling in his thoughts, his expression was painful. Like smile was something hard for him to do.
“Why not I bring Sungmin out later for grocery shopping and you can get some time alone with Ryeowook.” Eeteuk suggested.
“Thanks Teukie!”
“Sungmin!”
“Yes?!” Sungmin came running down the stair, a building block still in his hand.
“Can you accompany me to the buy something?”
“Ya, sure. I get Ryeowook now.” Sungmin chirped.
“Ah. Sungmin. We are going to get Ryeowook a surprise.”
“Surprise! Ooooh Let go now!”
Eeteuk gave Kangin a wink before leaving with Sungmin.
Kangin took a deep breath before picking up the building block Sungmin had dropped and walked upstairs.
Ryeowook was shocked to see Kangin handing him the block, he was expecting Sungmin. Kangin could feel the boy starting to tense up and immediately put on a smile. “Sungmin went out with Teukie to get something.” Kangin tried to sweeten his voice as much as he can, which unfortunately came out the wrong way sounding more like honeyed venom.
Ryeowook nodded his head solemnly and keep his eyes cast down on his castle. Kangin was not discouraged by this and instead decided to stick with his tactics. “Ryeowook, do you want to have some pudding?” The boy still refused to take his eyes of the blocks, shaking his head and continued with the construction of his castle. “Hey Ryeowook, do you want to go out and play soccer with me?” the boy shook his head again, not even bothered to look up. “How do you find the story book?” Finally this time Ryeowook look up, “Good” before returning to his construction. This blow was an impact to Kangin’s ego. Kangin signed in defeat and went downstairs, licking his new wound.
“Sungmin ah, is Ryeowook unhappy here?” Eeteuk inquired, trying to get some info out of Sungmin.
“Wookie? Why? He is happy. He always said we are lucky to meet Omma and Appa.”
“Oh I just thought he looked a bit gloomy these days.” Eeteuk tried to suppress a smile. “What do you think Ryeowook will like?”
“Let make him a pumpkin pie!” Sungmin grinned.
“Aish. We can get a pumpkin pie for you. But let get something Ryeowook likes.”
“Hmmm… I know! Let get him a Kim Jong Kook cd. I remember he used to loiter outside Aljumma office so he would listen to the songs.”
“Really?! I know Kim Jong Kook is a good singer. I like him too. But a six year old listening to Kjk…” Eeteuk pondered. Well since it from a reliable source… “Alright. The CD shop just at the corner.”
Eeteuk was shock to find Kangin watching television in the main hall and Ryeowook was now where insight.
“Sungmin can you take this into the kitchen”
After making sure, Sungmin was gone. Eeteuk went over to Kangin. “Didn’t you make use of the chance?”
“Teukie. The kid hates me.”
Eeteuk can’t help but feel sorry for Kangin. But he wasn’t sure about what he would do to salvage the situation. He just squeezed Kangin hand tightly. “Oh. I brought some albums for Ryeowook. Take them up for him. And get him to come down for dinner. I brought Chinese food.” Eeteuk passed Kangin the album from his sling bag. “I got to check out what Sungmin doing in the kitchen for so long.”
Kangin hesitated for a moment. I guess I have to try, he encouraged himself.
Ryeowook was shocked when he received the Cds. He rubbed his eyes again and again before confirming that it is really Kim Jong kook album he holding in his hand. He smile brightly at Kangin and thanked him again and again. Kangin felt that he finally saw a gleam of hope. “Come, let go down for dinner. Before Teukie start nagging again.”
To his surprise, Ryeowook actually hold Kangin hands when going down the stairs. Normally the small boy would prefer the railing.
Dinner was being interrupted by Heechul appearing at the door. Eeteuk and Kangin went to bear hug him like they haven’t seen him in years which in fact were barely two weeks. Sungmin and Ryeowook scrambled over, “Annyeonghaseyo” like they always do to the guests.
Heechul was confused now and replied “Annyeong” anyway. He shot Kangin a puzzled looks, demanding explanation, “You guys into child labour now?”
“Hyung, this is Sungmin, this is Ryeowook. They are our adopted kids.” Eeteuk gave him an expression that indicates we will go into details later.
“Sungmin, Ryeowook this is Heechul, He is not a guest, He our friend. He owns the bar at the street.
Heechul smiled and kneel down to be on eyes level with the kids. “Aren’t you two adorable. I see you guys around next time” and handed them each a lollipop from his pocket.
“I got to go now. I just came to drop you guys the souvenir. Aww why didn’t you tell me about the kids sooner. So I can buy something for them too.”
“Hyung, you didn’t call back. Anyway I will pop by later.” Kangin shouted for Heechul was already out the door.
