Whew! I really, really struggled with that. In fact, that's the primary reason why the story took so long: I wanted to be both faithful to John but also sympathetic. He doesn't make that an easy task, at least not for me. One of my betas who is less familiar with John that you was quite shocked by his words. I've actually saved all the transcripts of interviews I read with him in case I needed to point out that yes, those really are his words.
