Happy bday, Hanarobi!

May 20, 2016 20:46

I hope you have had a fun day, dear Hanarobi! I was just remembering the get-together last summer and what a fantastic time that was. Thank you for organizing it.

And now, some links:
〉 Fascinating article about Nate Moore, The man who put Marvel in the black: Nate Moore makes The Falcon, makes Black Panther, and he's making the future of film. I am so excited about the Black Panther movie!

〉I also really enjoyed this essay about the importance of the Amazon series Grace and Frankie, Why Millennial Women Need Grace and Frankie, a Show About 70-Somethings. I wanted to write to [Jane Fonda] then, to tell her that the real reason women my age like her show is because we need to see friendships beat adversity. We need to see vibrant older women taking charge of their bodies, refusing to be cast aside and invisible -- and leaning on each other along the way. Women my age often don’t get the chance to see beyond the first challenges of life -- "millennial angst," as many of my friends call it, becomes all-prevailing. But there's something incredibly consoling about seeing two women facing speed bumps long after their stumbling early 20s. And there is an overwhelming sense of security in Grace and Frankie's unlikely friendship; they've found an invaluable connection at a crucial point in life, when they are both unmoored for the first time. I love that show.

〉 You know I adore horror podcasts; check my last post for a list of my current faves. Here is an article by Emma Louise Backe about the increasing popularity of such podcasts: Ghosts in the Machine: Supernatural Podcasts and the Resurgence of Radio Horror. If humans were able to transmit themselves through power lines and across time zones, it didn’t seem like much of a stretch to apply the same physics to ghosts or spirits from beyond the grave.

〉 Speaking of podcasts, Welcome to Night Vale's show "The Investigators" is now for sale here or on iTunes.

〉 And continuing the podcast theme, I just binged listened to a new-to-me horror podcast which is by far the most frightening one I have ever heard -- seriously frightening. WARNING: deals with suicide. WARNING: really fucking scary. Please believe me. If you're still interested, all the episodes are here -- scroll down to the bottom; the first episode is titled "Introduction."

〉 A while ago, Jason Kottke linked to this four-minute film which I found beautiful: Mannahatta.

〉 Did you see the most recent The Blacklist? It ended with "Dodged a Bullet" by Greg Laswell. I immediately bought the song. Give a listen here.

Webster is down with a migraine, poor fella, so I've had a quiet afternoon and evening. Tomorrow morning my sister and I will run some errands for Mother and spend a couple of hours with her. Then in the afternoon the landlord is coming over ARGH. He seems a nice enough guy, but. I'll be glad when he's gone.

Have a good weekend, everybody.
