i really loved my raccoons.
there were three of them, mama coon, papa coon, and baby coon.
i think it's baby that's dead now.
i feed feral & stray cats, oppossums, squirrels, birds, and raccoons.
the squirrels and birds eat from the birdseed I put out.
started putting out food for the stray and feral cats about five years ago when I found beautiful torties and calicos in my garage. that's how I ended up with spud.
the oppossums and raccons are here anyway. and as what little open land that is left is built on for senior housing [one condo complex and five five assisted living facilities), more raccoons and possums are seen around the backyards. i'm guessing the large colony of displaced feral cats is helping keep out the rats and mice.
over this past weekend, when the snow started, three raccoons took refuge in my garage. The garage is attached to the house. Because of the blizzard of snow and the high winds, their access to the outside was blocked. I checked on them several times and made sure they had food and fresh water.
they were so cute. they slept like cats, curled up in a circle. they slept during the day and I could hear them in the evenings and early morning hours doing whatever raccoons do in a garage when trapped by a snowstorm.
when i'd go in there, they'd open their eyes, look at me, and go back to sleep. once, when I turned on the overhead light, the little baby one covered his eyes up with his paw. looked so cute.
now that one is dead. stone cold dead and in three tied garbage bags waiting for the Nassau County Dept. of Health to come by and pick up the body to test it for rabies.
yep, rabies. three raccoons have been found dead from rabies already this year. this does not comfort me.
sigh. it was a sweet little baby. i was going to check on the food and water again this morning and hopefully get some pictures of them sleeping. that's when I found it. the poor baby.
