Precious and the Big Exit

Sep 07, 2007 10:04

The first time Precious heard the PJ Harvey song “Big Exit,” the mouth of a stranger was coddling his penis. Precious’ penis is 7" in length and 1 1/8" in diameter when filled with blood. The stranger’s mouth has a circumference of 6". Precious and the stranger met in a pool of smoke encircling the basement of Home Sweet Home-a dive bar on Avenue D across from the Riis projects. The Riis projects were notoriously the most dangerous projects in the Lower East Side. Home Sweet Home was notoriously the gayest gay bar in the Lower East Side, affectionately called “Home Sweet Homo” by its clientele. The owner of the bar was a butch woman by the name of Sal who was often mistaken for a transvestite. Sal was also a taxidermy collector who was having an affair with Lou, the owner of Crazy Lou’s Discount Aquatic Supply. There were several dusty deer head hung on the basement walls of Home Sweet Home. Lou was certifiably crazy.

The alley behind Sal’s was a reputable cruising spot, second only to Columbus Park between Mulberry and Bayard Streets. Cruising is gay code for searching in public places for sexual partners. Gay code originated in San Francisco’s Eureka Valley (or what is more commonly referred to as The Castro), developed by a secret society of homosexuals called HUSH or the Homosexual Underground Safe Haven. The gay code contains seven more consonants than the English alphabet, is often spoken with a lisp, and is much more fashionable than Standard English. It was invented to further confuse heterosexuals about homosexual activity such as cruising.

According to penal code 245.10, public display of homosexuality was and continues to be a crime in New York City. The frequency of raids on cruising locales increased in the weeks preceding the Stonewall Riots in the summer of 1969. These raids often ended in violence. Some police officers used their batons to sodomize homosexuals found cruising. According to New York City penal code 245.11, sadomasochistic abuse is considered public display of offensive sexual material. It is illegal.

Sal hated to see her boys all black and blue but she also knew how to make a buck. The raids gave Sal incentive to rent the women’s bathroom in thirty minute intervals for the purpose of homosexual activity. Initially it cost $10 per session. Due to inflation it now costs $50 for twenty minutes. Sal installed a red light over the door of the bathroom. If there was a police raid Sal flashed the red light three times to warn the occupants. Then they had sufficient time to pull up their pants before the police could charge them with public indecency. Everything of or relating to homosexuality was illegal in New York in the 1960s. Sal could have her liquor license revoked for knowingly serving alcohol to three or more homosexuals at a time. Sal did not have a liquor license.

New York now has laws called “gay rights laws,” that protect homosexuals from discrimination based on their sexual orientation. Same sex marriage is illegal in the state of New York. Many heterosexual people believe that the homosexual prerogative is access to same sex marriages. Heterosexuals call this the “gay agenda.” Precious and the stranger had a very different “gay agenda.” They each contributed $25 to rent the bathroom in Home Sweet Home.

Precious did not know two important facts about the stranger: 1) his name, 2) the fact that he suffered from the disease Echolalia, causing him to repeat the vocalizations made by another person. When PJ Harvey sang “I wanna pistol,” the stranger muttered the word “pistol” to Precious’ penis. When PJ Harvey sang, “I wanna gun,” the stranger mumbled “gun.” When PJ Harvey sang, “I’m immortal when I’m with you. Baby, baby ain’t it true,” the stranger repeated “baby, baby.” Oblivious to this aberration, Precious was aroused by the sweet things the stranger said to his penis. His nipples stiffened against the cotton of his white Hanes undershirt. The little black hairs on the back of his neck rose though the hair in the center of the mole on his neck was flaccid. The mole was 1/8” in diameter. The hair was ½” in length. The mole went by the name of Susan. Susan was malignant and would later be traced to the skin cancer that killed Precious when he was 63 years old.

Many people think that all homosexuals die of AIDS or Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome. In sub-Saharan Africa 28.9 million are infected with the HIV virus or Human Immunodeficiency Virus that leads to AIDS. Approximately 2.7 million of the 28.9 million infected will suffer an AIDS-related death this year. They are not all homosexuals. Some homosexuals will die from AIDS. Other homosexuals, like Precious, will die from cancerous moles. One particularly famous homosexual, Harvey Milk, will be murdered by a man who loves Twinkies and hates homosexuals.

Precious and the stranger are not concerned with the different ways homosexuals die. Right now, in the dingy ladies room of Home Sweet Home, they live for each other. They live for pleasure. They simply live.

"Big Exit"
Look out ahead
I see danger come
I wanna' pistol
I wanna' gun
I'm scared baby
I wanna' run
This world's crazy
Give me the gun

Baby, baby
Ain't it true
I'm immortal
When I'm with you
But I wanna' pistol
In my hand
I wanna' go to
A different land

I met a man
He told me straight
'You gotta' leave
It's getting late'
Too many cops
Too many guns
All trying to do something
No-one else has done

Baby, baby...

I walk on concrete
I walk on sand
But I can't find
A safe place to stand
I'm scared baby
I wanna' run
This world's crazy
Gimme' the gun

Baby, baby
