More brain vomit on the shows I am currently watching, just because.
The second episode of Once upon a Time is even better than the first. It's amazing that after the big set-up that was the pilot, the first character who gets the spotlight is the Evil Queen. In this episode, Emma et al. only serve as a backdrop for the comparison and contrast of Evil Queen and Regina Mills, which is great, because I got to know the character more. The cursed denizens of Storybrooke and Emma are the result of her obsession with getting what she perceived to be the perfect happy ending, the achievement of her revenge. I feel that I know the Queen enough to feel sorry for her. She is a very angry character who felt that Snow White robbed her of her only chance at happiness. She's so blinded by hate and loss, she feels that only by destroying Snow White can she be happy, even at the cost of her father's life (whom she clearly loves).
As Regina Mills, she is as miserable as before, perhaps even more so now that she has her father's blood on her hands. Her quest for self-fulfillment through vengeance was as destructive to her as it was to everyone else. She may have ruined Snow White's happy ending with the Prince, but she is still the unhappier woman. While Snow White/Ms. Blanchard retains her optimism and sweetness (and common sense), the Evil Queen is driven further into darkness, guilt and insanity. Her "victory" brings her no pleasure. She doesn't acknowledge this and remains hall scheming and evil, but I think she knows that she hasn't accomplished anything.
Rumplestiltskin, on the other hand, is pure mischief incarnate. I don't think he's evil. I don't think he does what he does to actively harm anyone. He doesn't seem as destructive as the Evil Queen, but he does enjoy making people squirm. I don't know if he's got some tragic backstory like the Queen, but I prefer that he doesn't. I like flawed, all-too-human villains who have personal reasons for the evil they do, but I love amoral forces who wreak havoc simple for the sake of wreaking havoc. No fuss, no motivation, except good fun. Unlike the tragic villain, they can't be reasoned with. They do what they do with glee. Bonus points if they're far cleverer than the tragic villain, which they usually are. Rumplestiltskin seems like this kind of villain. He cackles and his eyes bulge at the prospect of causing mayhem like Peeves. Even as the urbane Mr. Gold, he confusion and chaos. He lets Regina do the town-wide scaring and intimidating. He scares and intimidates her with just one word. Please.
How cool is that?
And how cool is it that Sleeping Beauty's wicked fairy is named Maleficent? A part of me reverts to kindergarten Disney Princess wannabe and squees at this. Does that mean we'll get Flora, Fauna, and Merryweather, too?
It's official: I love this show. Now bring on the Prince Charming/Snow White romance!
I can't believe I am squeeing for noona love. I can't believe I am watching a kdrama named Flower Boy Ramyun Shop (one of the most unfortunate titles I've seen for a kdrama thus far). I can't believe a scene of a student almost kissing his teacher would make me go all fangirly.
Jung Il Woo, what have you done to me?
Korea is really good at dishing out the bishies (unlike Japan, where the supposedly "handsome" actors make me go WTF), but JIW is a class on his own. He meshes male energy and vitality with female delicateness. He's pretty, but he is also manly.
Also, he has insane chemistry with that teacher noona whose name I don't know. At least the age gap isn't 12 years, like in Kim Bum's last drama. I had a hard time swallowing that one, until I finally stopped watching.
If this is a cable drama, does that mean we'll be losing the fluff soon and we'll be getting some cable-quality love scenes? I am watching this with my mother, and she fully expects a fun, wholesome youth drama. Maybe.
Yes, this means my seasonal aversion to kdramas has finally ended. FBRS is a fun show with lovable characters and incredibly hammy (and it's good!) acting. I can't believe I forgot to download the next episode before leaving home this morning!
